The best running joke on Coming to America is that everyone around Eddie Murphy swears and Eddie Murphy can't. They took away what he was famous for at the time and it made the character all the better. Boundaries spark creativity.

Legit surprised that it was Ebert who didn't like Coming To America and Siskel who was championing it because given what i know about their tastes it feels like it should be the other way around with Ebert championing the sweet natured love story that became a huge audience pleasing hit and Siskel saying that he would've preferred there to be more of an edge to it. (LIke just when i think i can start to predict what each one is gonna say, they end up completing flipping the script on me here! I love it!)

Seems to me that Roger wanted Coming To America to be more like Beverley Hills Cop, where a guy comes from Detroit to Beverley Hills, and he has an "edge" to him because he has more street smarts than the Beverley Hills residents. But the thing is, Roger hated Beverley Hills Cop. So not sure what he wanted Coming To America to be. 🤣

On Coming to America Roger tries to go all feminist but the entire reason he came to America was to find a woman who he could respect and who didn't just serve him all the time. Talk about an ill aimed objection. There is the entire scene at the beginning of how silly it was for his prepared queen to be willing to bark like a dog. This is the entire premise of the movie.

Short Circuit 2 really is the better movie. It's funnier and edgier -- the scene where Number 5 is almost beaten to death by someone he thought was his friend, is genuinely terrifying and heartbreaking. Number 5's battery fluids splattering on Oscar's henchman like blood as they pound on him with a crowbar and an axe is a really visceral scene. And the song "i need a hero" during the climax totally slaps.
@TotalMeltdown2
5 ай бұрын
It's a better written and directed movie. Much better effects. No annoying Allly Sheedy. Ben is more of an actual character and less of a stereotype like in the first. Michael McKean is better than Steve Guttenberg, has more interaction with Johnny 5, and an arc to his character. There are more moments that make you feel for Johnny 5 especially when he's attacked by the thugs. The musical score is solid. So yeah. Short Circuit 2 is miles better than the original which was an average at best movie

That kind of thing just wasn’t considered so grotesque back then, likely because the Short Circuit movies were never that popular enough for people to really care. There were also hardly any characters of South Asian descent in Hollywood at that time. If anything, most Americans of South Asian descent at that time likely would have just been happy to have had any sort of presence in American movies or television. It’s different now because Bollywood and it’s stars have become more internationally known. Plus, plenty of Americans of South Asian descent have had success in Hollywood as well.
