Saw the 3 movies in the title in theaters at the time. There was one lone guy outside the theater with a picket sign at Lolita. People were laughing so loud at some of the gags in Something about Mary that we missed some of them in the theater. Good times.

Just watched it and it might be his best film. That moment where the story jumps forward in time and you realize just how much of Lo's childhood was stolen by Humbert and Quilty is absolutely devastating.

I think Gene was way out on Lolita. Pedestrian? Seriously. There's a scene where she straddles Humbert while sitting on his lap. Is that pedestrian? Irons said Lolita was his best work, Swain had never acted before and does brilliantly. Morricone wrote one of his most beautiful scores. Contrastly, Kubrick's film is silly and forgettable, Sellers for the only time in his career was actually annoying in the role, and the comedy was a little too light, like James Mason doted on Lolita like she was his precious daughter. Lyne's film is far superior. Just my opinion.

@@laland5752 i didn't even watch the older one because of all the reviews saying that it was extremely watered down and one of Kubrick's worst films (i'm not an especially big fan of his in the first place). this caused me to feel that i knew where the film would go and wasn't interested investing my time. i just thought that the one from 98 was spellbinding.

@Dreamline78

It's a 20th Century Fox movie, and they're notorious for getting videos which contain clips of their movies taken down, regardless of fair use. So masking the title makes it harder for them to detect this clip.

The training of Bandaras's character is the humor in the film, and the arc is watching the acolyte grow and become more invested in his new role. Antonio actually handled it with fun and grace and as he blossoms, the film gains energy. I love Anthony Hopkins in this role, but Gene missed it totally on how Antonio functioned in the film. And only a straight man misses Antonio's charisma! 😅😅

I couldn't disagree more. Banderas was a work in progress in this film, he was learning how to become a gentleman and Zorro and by the end of the film he earned the right to wear that mask. I would take The Mask of Zorro over an overwhelming majority of superhero films released in the past 20 years
