Multi-instrumental artist CAM FORRESTER performs an authentic cover of the epic, and ground-breaking song ‘Sister Ray’ by The Velvet Underground, in a video recreation of a 1967-era Velvet Underground concert at the Boston Tea Party, by using a backdrop collage made from several period photos of the original venue, as well as authentic music equipment, stage presentation, lighting effects, and intense Andy Warhol-style zooming & panning.
The song describes a scene of “total debauchery and decay” in Lou Reed's words.
Reed wrote the lyrics in the form of shifting dialogue, from the points of view of various drag queens involved in a drug-fuelled orgy with some drunken sailors, which goes horribly wrong when one of them gets shot. Too high to realise the severity of the situation, nobody does anything about it, and in the end Police appear.
The original 1967 ‘White Light/White Heat’ album recording (released January 1968) was an incredible 17 minutes long, and was performed entirely live in the studio in a single take, this strategy having been agreed beforehand by all band members in order to avoid arguments afterward about who sounded best.
The result was a musical power struggle between the band, based around the song's main riff, but with members going off on tangents and trying to increase their volume above the rest in solo sections. There are also several changes in dynamic and tempo as the song progresses, with the mood of the song reflecting the chaotic scenes described in the lyrics. The recording is very distorted much like the rest of the album, since it was performed at such high volume, and there was a huge amount of leakage across all the microphones in the room, which meant that unwanted noise could not be filtered out during the mixing & mastering process.
My cover version is based on highlights from both the album recording, as well as the version recorded live at The Gymnasium in 1967. As always, I transcribed and interpreted each part as faithfully to the original performances as I reasonably could, while making conservative use of tasteful improvements in keeping with the integrity of the music. I also did my best to replicate the overall mix and stereo image of the original, just with added clarity gained from recording each instrument part individually.
