Divers itching to go for a short day-trip can now take a 20-minute boat ride out to Sisters’ Island Marine Park, where Singapore’s first dive trail opened to the public on Sunday (Nov 8). Home to a variety of marine life such as sea stars, hard and soft corals, and clown fishes, the dive site is located at Pulau Subar Laut, or the Big Sister's Island. Signboards underwater will guide divers around the two 100m loops about 6 metres and 15 metres below the surface.
Dr Karenne Tun, Deputy Director (Coastal and Marine) at National Biodiversity Centre, explains how visibility in local waters is affected by seasons and sediments from the regional environment. And while poor visibility may be daunting to some, divers more comfortable with these conditions can take up the challenge to go on a “treasure hunt” for Singapore’s underwater critters.
