Hello Emma,Hope you have wonderful time and enjoying it. Actually I have slight problem on the way of modelling from Google Earth to SketchUp. The problem is when I downloaded the model from (SketchUp===>Window ===> components===>Navigations) the model is supposed to be located at the place which is belong to on the map, but the model would not go at the place on the map actually it moved whenever I moved the mouse I mean it would not locate it as it's meant to be automatically,??!! I was wonder that should I have to set up specific setting before I even began??!! I would appreciate in advance if there is notable information I would consider at.Thanks very much.

This was a very useful tutorial. Would it be appropriate or even possible to use the Google maps street overlays to draw the appropriate streets? I have recently rediscovered SketchUp which is clearly now much better than the somewhat crude utility it was 12 years ago and can see an enormous potential to crowdsource site plans and similar things for shared community use. It seems to me that local government areas could make a lot of geospatial data generally available so that we don't need to constantly reinvent plans that are already in existence.

Hi Paul, completely agree, although many people seem to be quite guarded with sharing information. As for using Google maps, yes, for sure, I think you could import screen shots and overlay to draw the streets, although I have not done this myself.

If you don't mind me saying, you sound *exactly* like the Past Lives Author Jenny Cockell. This was a "putting the tree into country" move on Sketchup's behalf. They expect people to believe they "sold" the Rights to "someone else". I don't think so. What a pity to cripple the software. Better to have left it in and created a non commercial upgraded Sketchup which I'd be happy to pay for so I can practice before getting a £500 Pro License. Now you have to get terrain etc. from Independent Companies - many of whom don't charge for it.

Great stuff Emma! Thanks for your time! I'm curious, you ever run into the issue where the selected component just does not snap / blind / translate itself to the coordinates? I've tried selecting the ground plane, unselecting, activating different tools before downloading, looking for a setting saying, "snap selected to geo coordinates" bla bla bla, nada... This shit just isn't snapping. Any ideas as to why?

I'm afraid I haven't ever had any issues with this, and can't really think of why it might be happening. Is it just the one component or all components in model? Could be a corrupt component. Have you tried 'fixing model' from the model info box?
@stefanbachrodt7072
7 жыл бұрын
It seems to be highly intermittent, I did it with the same model from the same creator, sometimes it snaps other times it does not. I found that if I add more images then sometimes it behaves. The only thing i found regarding fixing is under Window - Model Info - Statistics tab - "Fix Problems"... When i do this however, nothing happens so i really don't know. This method is to tedious for my liking anyhow. Someone is offering 500 usd for a 3D map of Milan, Italy. Figured this would be easy but it turns out the model names are in other languages and incorrectly named and what all else so it makes the job very difficult. I am thinking of getting Placemaker, it seems really cool and really easy to use. If they are not happy with the limited level of detail of that i will just have to screen capture from Google Maps 3D and then use some photogrammetry software to create a Point-Cloud system which will require alot of cleaning up but retains almost every level of detail rendered in GMaps. Here's a link to describing how that works, you'll need to translate the page. www.archiradar.it/it/libri/tutorial-archicad-artlantis/11-tutorials/archicad/206-modello-3d-google-earth-archicad.html The official story of what's going on with Sketchup and Google can be found here, straight from the horses mouth. forums.sketchup.com/t/upcoming-change-to-add-location/40953

Hi Emma - I'm trying to create a site model following your steps but my site has no built models in Google Earth. I am aware of digimaps/have used digimaps before but unfortunately are not accurate. How would you go about modelling buildings that have not already been created? (e.g. getting the correct building heights) Thanks!
@FirstInArchitecture
7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes it is a bit tricky - usually I would use google street view and use common sizes for example, if the building is in blockwork, or brickwork, you can count bricks to estimate height of a building. Then you can base other buildings on that... time consuming but sometimes the only way. Depending if you have a topographical survey, they sometimes give eaves heights, ridge heights of surrounding buildings, which can be useful too.
