It seems that there's more to stubby tools than just less. As one reduces the mechanical advantage of levers, the stubbiness of the tool must be more valuable than the lack of grip. To explore stubby tools, I picked up some secondhand tools and cut them down to size. Then tried to use them. I cut up a pair of adjustable wrenches, a pile of combination wrenches, a screwdriver, a hammer, a pair of ratchets, and a pair of slip-joint pliers. I did not cut up the Snap On screwdriver, nor the Husky Pro ratcheting box end wrench.
With torque wrench in one hand and the stubby in the other, I quickly hit the limits of the stubby world.
I also set the stage for making my own Snap On version of the Mac pocket pry bar thanks to CP the Tool Addict's enthusiasm for them. Stay tuned for more on that.
