This piece is about Skírnismál. The saga is about the love between Freyr and the giant Gerðrs. The original contains 42 verses. Of course it took far too long. But since it's a connected story, I didn't want to tear it apart. That's why the whole piece is summarized in 10 verses. The rhyme form was also modernized. The music style here is also more modern and is in the area of pagan metal. In this case I liked it best.
1. Verse - Freyr
Freyr einn sat, hugr þung,
fagra Gerðr, hann leit ung.
Á Hliðskjálf hann sá með tár,
ástin tók hann, sorg og sár.
2. Verse - His Sorrow
Hjarta sefað, veröld grár,
enginn gleði, enginn tár.
Skírnir, trúr, fer ferð í hast,
Gerðr hljóti, ástsæll gast.
3. Verse - Skirnir's Journey
Á hestri fer Skírnir hinn víð,
djúpt í jötnar land, hinn fríð.
Gull og gripir, fagrar minngjǫf,
Gerðr's hjarta skal verða kǫnngjǫf.
4. Verse - Gift and Plea
"Ó, Gerðr fögur, tak við glæ,
gull og gripi, verðum tvæ."
En Gerðr kvað: "Ei, enginn má,
ástarsvefn, ég segja má."
5. Verse - Threatening with Magic
"Þá sefi ég, seiðin drjúgr,
kuldinn, hræðslan, ótti skrúgr."
Gerðr hræddist, beygði sig,
til Freys fer hún, á næsta stig.
6. Verse - Promise of Love
"Neiðar nóttir, níu þó,
þá kem ég til Freys, í mó."
Skírnir hverf, með hjarta glatt,
frétti Frey, og gaf til satt.
7. Verse - Freyr's Hope
Freyr frækn, hlustar fregn,
gladdur, léttur, á nýrri megn.
Nóttin löng, tíminn seinn,
mánuðr hálfr, angist ein.
8. Verse - The Ninth Day
Níundi dagr, tíminn líðr,
himinn skær, jörð heill og fríðr.
Freyr sem gull í geislum bjart,
til Gerðr's bíður, með hjarta stíft.
9. Verse - Reunion
Tíminn líðr, hún heldur orði,
kemr til Freys, í sólar borði.
Freyr glaðr, og Gerðr fagn,
ástin blómstrar, í fögru agn.
10. Verse - A New Morning
Nýr dagr, nýr veröld,
Freyr og Gerðr, í ástar skjöld.
Ást sigra, þrátt gegn meini,
bundinn eilíf, blómið leyni.
----------------------------------
1. Verse - Freyr
Freyr sat alone, his heart was heavy,
the fair Gerðr, he saw her from afar.
On Hliðskjálf he sat with tears,
love seized him, pain and yearning.
2. Verse - His Sorrow
His heart burdened, the world was gray,
no joy, just sorrow in the bay.
Skírnir, faithful, sets out on the way,
to bring Gerðr, as Freyr desires.
3. Verse - Skírnir's Journey
On his horse, Skírnir rides far,
deep into the land of giants, prepared.
Gold and gifts, fair treasures,
Gerðr's heart he should thus secure.
4. Verse - Gift and Plea
"O fair Gerðr, accept this splendor,
gold and gifts, we two in love's wonder."
But Gerðr spoke: "No, none shall have,
my love’s sleep, I say true."
5. Verse - Threatening with Magic
"Then I'll curse you, with strong spells,
cold, fear, and dread will quell."
Gerðr trembled, and bowed down,
she goes to Freyr, very soon.
6. Verse - Promise of Love
"Nine nights you shall wait here,
then I'll come to Freyr, belong to you, dear."
Skírnir returns, his heart full of glee,
tells Freyr the truth, no delay, you see.
7. Verse - Freyr's Hope
Freyr hears the joyous news,
his heart rejoices in every view.
But each night feels like a year,
the moon so close, the time so near.
8. Verse - The Ninth Day
The ninth day, the time is close,
the sky shines bright, the earth exposed.
Freyr like gold in the radiant light,
awaits Gerðr, his heart held tight.
9. Verse - Reunion
Time passes, she keeps her word,
comes to Freyr, in the shining herd.
Freyr is glad, and greets Gerðr so bright,
love blooms in the kiss of light.
10. Verse - A New Morning
A new day, a new world,
Freyr and Gerðr, in love unfurled.
Love triumphs despite all pain,
their bond remains eternal, in heart’s domain.
