Would 60mm 99a f4 wheels be okay for an 80’s deck? Or should I go with something gripper? I like carving bowls, bombing hills, power slides, aerials, and most of all going fast! (I also occasionally practice Ollies, switch riding, etc.) I want to learn how to grind in the bowl at my local, am getting pretty close! Those 60mm 99a Formula Four wheels will work great for what you're wanting to skate! 60mm wheels are kinda big, so just get some 1/8 or 1/4 inch risers so you won't get wheelbite super easily, and you'll be mashing those bowls. Have fun! - Tim

The difference will almost be unnoticeable. The 54s will naturally be a tiny bit smoother on rough pavement and will last a little longer just because they're bigger. The 53s will be slightly lighter and give you a quicker pop for flip tricks. But since the difference is only 1 mm, the difference will be negligible. So, I'd say if the street spots where you live are pretty rough, go with the 54s. How big of wheels are you skating right now? - Tim

@tacticsboardshop
3 жыл бұрын
It's all going to depend on what your priorities are with your skating. If transportation is your primary goal, then you'll want soft wheels, but soft wheels are not good for doing tricks. If you want to do tricks, then you should get hard wheels. Bigger wheels (55 - 60mm) are faster and a little bit smoother, but if you want something that's lighter, and more responsive for flip tricks and technical skating, then you'll want some smaller wheels (50 - 54). The speed difference between 52-54 will be subtle but noticeable, especially if you're skating spots that are pretty rough. Cheers! - Tim

How rough of roads are we talking about here? Are they super-chunky? Or can you roll on them and keep your speed with hard wheels? If you're wanting hard wheels that will slide (99a - 101a), then 53mm - 55mm wheels should work well for you. But if the roads you're talking about are VERY rough, then you'd probably be better off with some softer cruiser wheels. Such as the 52mm - 54mm OJ Plain Jane Keyframes or the Ricta Clouds. Softer wheels are good for rolling over chunky ground, but they don't slide well and they're less forgiving for tricks and wheelbite. - Tim

The best wheels for doing tricks are hard wheels around 99 - 101a. The size and shape are more of a personal preference, and will depend on what types of skating you like to do. If you like skating actual street spots, then go for some 53-56mm so you can roll over a little bit of crust. If you skate mostly smooth skateparks and do technical types of tricks, then get some smaller wheels around 50-54mm. Are you thinking about soft wheels or hard wheels? For hard wheels, I'd say 54mm - 56mm would be the kind of middle ground for a smooth-ish ride while still not being too big for flip tricks. You could go even smaller with soft wheels for flip tricks, but soft wheels aren't that forgiving for slides or pivots or even just landing a couple degrees off. The Ricta Clouds or the OJ Plain Jane Keyframes are good soft cruiser wheels that are the size of regular skateboard wheels so you can still do tricks with them, they just don't slide very easily. I hope that helps a little! Cheers! - Tim

The other factor with bigger wheels is also the higher weight. It might not matter too much when talking about 52mm versus 53mm of the same shape and brand, but the weight difference between 52mm slim and say a 56mm wide or larger will definitely be very noticeable. In fact, for ollies I would kind of recommend starting with 52mm or 53mm. Just a medium to smaller size. It'll definitely feel a bit easier. Having said that, I had little problems doing ollies with bigger wheels, but especially when the shape is quite a bit wider, the weight will be a lot more. 56mm is still within range of doing tricks with in my opinion. But only barely. If you're a smaller younger dude, definitely get 52/53mm wheels instead.

The size is generally subjective to whatever the skater prefers, but if you're wanting to skate places on these wheels then, you'll want ones that aren't too small so you can keep some speed. So something around 99a, 54mm would be good. Soft wheels are better for transportation, but so if you wanted to switch between the wheels then you could do that too but it's kind of a hassle. The best option is to have two different set-ups, one has hard wheels, and the other has soft wheels. The cruiser set up can be made up of whatever old components you have laying around so you don't have to buy anything new. I hope that helps! - Tim

Within time and use, would you say that a 54mm wheel would be reduced to 53mm? If so, how long? Also, which trucks size would be more apropriate for it, considering you wanna a light and easy to flip street and street-park skate.

I've tried to heelflip and 360 flip a 8.375 board with 56mm wheels and heavy trucks (built aiming flow park and vert skate). It did not go well, felt like i was trying to skate a gym wheight used for bíceps Curl.
@tacticsboardshop
3 жыл бұрын
It really all depends on how much you skate, how long, and what kinds of surfaces you skate on. If you skate a perfectly smooth and slippery skatepark all the time, it'll take months to wear it down 1mm. But if you're skating crusty sandpaper like ground and doing lots of powerslides and hill bombs everyday, then you could lose a mm in a week or less. My wheels usually last me about half a year, but I also don't skate everyday and I let them get pretty small before getting new ones. As far as which trucks to use, any trucks will work (as long as they properly fit the deck) and you'll just have to build up your leg strength to get the board around. Hollow axle/kingpin trucks like the Thunder or Independent Hollow Lights do make the board a bit lighter, but it's only by 100-120 grams (50-60g per truck) which is about 1/5 of a pound. So even if it feel like a gym weight now, it'll get easier as you skate more and your legs get stronger. I hope that helps! Cheers! - Tim

@tacticsboardshop
4 жыл бұрын
The first question is what type of skating are you wanting to do? If you're wanting to do tricks, like flip tricks, ledges, rails etc. then you'll want hard wheels (97-101a). If you're just cruising around, then soft wheels are the way to go (78-90a). If you're wanting hard wheels, then you can get some in the 54-56mm range to help with the roughness a little. If you're wanting soft wheels, the size isn't going to matter as much because it'll be smooth either way. Here in the Pacific North West, the roads pretty bad, so a lot of skaters have two different set ups. We have our main board for doing tricks with that has hard wheels on it, and our cruiser for transportation with big soft wheels on it. Sorry for responding with at novel! 😂 I hope this helped answer your question! - Tim

Can we put any size of wheels in any skateboard?
@tacticsboardshop
2 жыл бұрын
Sort of. Any size wheel under 60mm is usually fine, but you can run into problems if the wheels start to get too big for the trucks. If you put wheels that are bigger than 65mm, you start running into wheelbite problems because there isn't enough space between the top of the wheel and the bottom of the deck to allow the board to turn. If you want to have really big wheels on a regular skateboard, you need to install riser pads to give yourself some more wheelbite clearance. I hope that helps! 👍🛹 - Tim

Pick wheels that will work best for your skating, because you can always use a riser pad on your trucks to accommodate for bigger wheels. If you don't want riser pads on your trucks, then don't go bigger than 55mm because you might run into issues with wheelbite. Smaller wheels (50 - 55mm) are better for technical types of skating like flat ground, ledges, manuals, etc. And bigger wheels (55 - 60mm) are better for transition skating and rougher street spots. The contact patch isn't going to make that much of a difference for flip tricks, what will make the most difference is the hardness. If you're looking for a hardwheel that's a little bit smoother of a ride, then you'll have to go bigger in diameter. 54-56mm wheels will roll better on rougher ground than 50-54mm wheels. But if you're used to smaller wheels, then those will feel huge. There are cruiser wheels that are the same size as regular skate wheels that will smooth out your ride for sure, cruiser wheels just aren't as forgiving for tricks as hard wheels. So you'll have to find what works best for your skating and where normally skate. I hope that wasn't too vague! 😂 - Tim

You'll still be able to do flip tricks, ledges, manuals and anything you want to do with 54mm wheels. If they're significantly bigger than your last wheels, it might take you a while to get used to them and your flip tricks might feel wonky for a little bit, but after you get used to them you'll be able to do whatever you want to with them. An advantage of 54mm wheels is that they're gonna roll a lot smoother on rougher pavement than 50-53mm wheels, so if you're skating rougher street spots, you'll keep your speed easier.
