A7 III's price-point of $2,000 (almost at the upper limit of APS-C pricey MFT) is a killer. Not everyone can afford a $3,000-$4,000 camera, So D850, though the best of the best, cannot sell to the masses. Canon's 5DS and 5DSR has been almost forgotten, but their price is still in that $3,500 zone. 5D mk IV, in spite of their horrible video codec, is still $3,000+. Panasonic's GH5 and Olympus's OMD-EM10 II, in spite of their tiny sensors, are still $1,500+. So what will the average enthusiast, who want FF not crop-sensor, do? And persons like Jason Lanier are touting the Sony lineup. Like Apple-users, Sony has somehow built a "fanboy" die-hard follower system, who will not follow logic but doggedly argue on the perfection and superiority of Sony cameras. These things add up.

I can believe that Sony has sold more mirrorless cameras in recent years. The other statements are harder to believe.

To get the full story you'd have to delve into how the figures were derived. I mean if Sony sold more FF cameras for just one week in 2018 then can they still make this claim?...technically yes. Of course it would be misleading. That said it could also be entirely true. If Sony has maintained that lead for several months consecutively then I'm sure they would have mentioned that. To be fair Nikon made a similar claim when the D850 was released but with the caveat that it was within a short time period when of course you'd expect a surge in sales given the camera was newly released. I don't live in the USA so can't comment on the true popularity of Sony cameras, certainly here in the UK 90% of cameras I see in use are Canon/Nikon. I wouldn't doubt however that the A7III release really boosted sales for Sony, that they are No1 overall I do find somewhat questionable. I believe Canon still rule the sales roost by a considerable margin over everybody in all camera sectors. Now had Sony stated they were the biggest seller of " mirrorless full frame ", well that would be different given they are the only seller of mirrorless FF at this point in time....now that I do believe 😊

Mark Twain said their are three kinds of lies. Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics. Matt has been doing his homework for years in this field. I appreciate him ruffling some feathers here, because I don't think he prefers to do that by nature. And, hypothetically, if Sony is actually selling more cameras that is irrelevant to me personally. If I phones only took pictures without the ability to be a phone, they would outsell everyone statistically. I wont buy a Sony camera unless Nikon and Canon go out of business. Or if Im looking for a professional camera that is a dedicated video camera.

I think it's an ongoing thing I see the top camera manufacturers leap frogging each other technologically and design wise. For instance if Nikon sort out their video AF then I see there Z cameras selling well as they do such a good job on their ergonomics colour science.

Sceptic about sales figures for Sonys that ARE verified. Not sceptic about Nikon new mirrorless camera even tho Nikon hasn't done a proper mirrorless camera and is 5 years behind. And jumping their PR bandwagon. Shame on you Matt.

I’m sceptical to all three, but I’m not saying it’s impossible. Sony has always been good at product placement, and looking at the amount of KZitem “pros” that has switched for some reason, I can see that a lot of people go with Sony when they want a FF camera. They are small and light, and WYSIWYG makes it easier to understand things like depth of field.

A7R3 is not selling as well as A73. There was a massive A7R3 discount on mid year sales from were I live. (outside US). A73 is really cheap compared with some APCS ones. But for me the issue with Sony is with lens. I'm a 'native lens' only guy and their native lens are pricey. so the overall cost i.e. body plus lens is high. But i believe, wait till Christmas sale and you'll be able to pick up a good deal with cashbacks etc. I believe the deal will be even sharper once Nikon and Canon comes to the party. Same with D850, from where i live there is no stock issues and the dealers started to discount it. i agree, the stats should come from independent source not the manufacturer. at the same time, Sony is the only MILC FF guys, so it's possible. It'll be short lived success once Nikon releases their MILC FF. it's not that Nikon would lead but there'll be more pieces of the pie and the pieces would be smaller.
