The only problem is that the students will not know how to (correctly) face a negative gradient.

Given an equation in the form of y=m*x+b, where m and b are both constants, chose any starting value of x, and call it x1. Then chose a change in x, and call it d. The new x-value after this change is, x2 = x1 + d Now find the corresponding points of y1 and y2. y1 = m*x1 + b y2 = m*x2 + b Determine y2 in terms of x1, and then in terms of y1. y2 = m*(x1 + d) + b y2 = m*x1 + m*d + b y2 = y1 + m*d Our points on the equation form a right triangle, between the points (x1, y1), (x2, y2), and where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect at (x2, y1). What is the base width (W) of the triangle? It is the distance between point (x1, y1) and (x2, y1), which equals the difference between the x-coordinates of these points. I.e. W=x2-x1 What is the height (H) of the triangle? It is the distance between point (x2, y2) and (x2, y1), which equals the difference between the y-coordinates of these points. I.e. H=y2-y1 Calculate W=x2 - x1: x2 = x1 + d W = (x1 + d) - x1 W = d Calculate H = y2 - y1: y2 = y1 + m*d H = (y1 + m*d) - y1 H = m*d Our triangle's base width is equal to d, the distance we chose between x inputs. Our triangle's height is equal to m*d. Notice that the ratio of H/W is a constant, that is equal to m? This means that no matter what we make d, no matter what we make x1 or x2, this right triangle will always have the ratio between its base and height. This means that the hypotenuse of this triangle will always have the same angle above the horizontal, and will be part of the same line.
