Not a Mormon, but, have been harassed by a ballerina online. Not Hannah. Do notice that with cults and narcissistic people, looks are more important than personality. Which, makes sense, superficiality is par for the course in deception.

Sigh.... This is said of Christianity in general. Like any group there will be bad apples and good ones. Projecting the actions of a few on the entire group that identifies that way is lazy at best. Malicious at worst. As for arguments of personality, I take it your personal life is one that may not hold the standards of their doctrine or seeking to emulate it in any meaningful way and are 8nstead content with the "personality" of the life you live? If that's your thing, then do you, I'm not going to stop you. But I would question what you consider to be traits of actual personality vs. just really bad and toxic behavior that violates the standards of lds doctrine.

@Things_I_wish_I_knew Mirrors? What bad behavior was shown, other than correlation of thinness in ballerina circles and Mormonism? Really, this is just a "rubber glue, goes back to you," juvenile. Thanks for illustration of superficiality, though, by making assumptions of me, based on one comment, rather than explaining, in detail, on how my post was wrong. Do cults use superficiality? Yes. Do narcissists use superficiality? Yes.

Most religions are cults. We all should live by the golden rule! Do unto others are you would have them do unto you. Be kind and do not harm others. Most people are messed up. Hannah's spouse does seem creepy. Why does she show her kids in all videos..She is a ballerina and has been for many years...

Utah Mormon Culture is definitely an interesting microcosm… So many things that are not the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m not saying you’re wrong - I’ve moved to Utah after growing up in the Midwest and I totally see that - I’m just not that 😂 I’m glad for my faith in Christ and relationship with Him, and the actual teachings that point me to Him and draw me closer to Him and His mercy, grace and love - that’s my joy and peace 🥰 General Conference is next weekend - you could check it out and see for yourself 😊

I was part of the LDS church for about 3 years in total, but not in Utah. While they did emphasize being healthy and fit, most people in my particular branch didn't care about skinniness per say. The bit about men having a strong work ethic and being wealthy was the same. I kinda wonder if that social pressure gets better the further one is from Utah? The more I learn about LDS in that state, the more it seems like its own microcosm and that's a spooky thought.

Well yeah, Utah is their yard so they get to play dirty at home. There's a lot of red tape about "religious freedoms," "state's rights" and other concepts petty tyrants love to leverage when they're reversing the victim and oppressor role- so it practically causes a national incident any time the government tries to enforce the law there. Whatever pretty face they put on for people outside of Utah, don't buy it- if they got their way they'd treat people outside of Utah just as badly.

I think any religion does better when it is surrounded by diversity. Mormonism seems to be most toxic when they are in the majority. I grew up in a high school where there was only one other LDS member in my grade. The church still had the same elements of toxicity but it was a lot more watered down, and the dissenting voices were much louder.

I grew up in Utah, and I never really felt the pressure to be skinny, but I would also argue that my Mormon experience was slightly different than the average. Most of my friends were non-members. I was already super skinny and had huge breasts, so no one really questioned my looks (I definitely think I would have gotten a different narrative if I'd not looked like that). My mom also had a lot of mental health problems and prioritized other things. That being said, I know more than one girl in my ward who was definitely getting that message, even if they never outright admitted that they were.

For the world-wide audience ... There is more than one sect of the Mormon religion. The largest sect (about 14 million members world-wide) has its headquarters in Salt Lake City (S.L.C.), Utah, U.S.A. For the past 50 years, S.L.C. population has been about 50% Mormon. In this video, she mentions Provo, Utah which was about 70 percent Mormon, of the S.L.C. sect, from 1960 - 2005. Starting around 2005, there was a mass exodous of high technology companies from California to cities nearby Provo, which have brought in hundreds of non-Mormons to have fun at the water-park in Provo. Until 2005, the only non-Mormons in Utah were the atheletes enrolled at Brigham Young University in Provo, when they were flown in for games. I have attended a Baptist Church in Provo (or nearby Orem) that had 7 members in attendance for the Sunday service. I have also attended the Evangelical Free Church in Provo (or nearby Orem) which had about 200 members attending the Sunday service.

I would not dispute one individual's experience. But I've been a member all my life as have my ancestors back to nearly the forming of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The LDS church teaches the ten commandments. This doesn't mean all of our members follow all the ten commandments, some of our members commit murder. And we teach not to covet or envy which I think the people you described missed in Sunday School. The commandments are taught much more than the word of wisdom which is taught to help the weakest members. I would encourage you to consider the teachings in the Bible and Book of Mormon which actually warn against what you saw. Look up "the Nephite pride cycle" and you will learn that the LDS church actually preaches against what you saw. So, yes many members of the LDS Church fail to live up to their ideals, but don't blame the church. Although despite what you saw, statistically members of the LDS church actually do better than the population at large. Not everyone you see in Utah is a member. I lived in California, it was 1000 times worse than what I've seen in Utah where I live now, but again I'm just one individual and I'm sure my experience is different from yours.

In the early 80s I went to school at Snow college, in Ephraim UT, I remember that most of the female coeds were overweight and not very attractive. Times have changed and I am 65 now. I always wondered why the LDS word of wisdom never really addressed obesity. I am not from Utah, but I was an active LDS member till I was 59.

LDS culture preaches being healthy so yes, if someone is overweight, they may feel a greater need to lose weight. Utah has more plastic surgery per capita than elsewhere, but it's not because of the women wanting to be super models... it's because LDS women tend to have more kids that does a number on their bodies. the women go in for a "Mommy make-over" to repair the damage. Mormon men aren't judged by their wealth. My current bishop works at a sporting goods chain store. I've had bishops who were cops, schoolteachers, retirees, etc... The Church teaches people to do better... be healthier (LDS and 7th Day Adventists have the longest life spans of any group).. it encourages getting an education and being frugal and not wasting money, so LDS often have more money. Rich LDS are not praised any more than any other group praises their rich members. As far as fat women go, she should come to my church. We got plenty of fat men and women who still hold positions of leadership.

I live in Utah they stress health but do NOT focus exclusively on looks... Ffs, this is projection. They do want bigger families traditionally, and yes it's stresses men be high earners and great providers. But the rest of this? It's projection, more likely you were looking for an excuse to justify your desires to leave and disassociate with your faith. I can't tell you the number of times I went to a congregation meeting and found women happily married who are overweight and their husband's thin. Or how both of them worked. Or how he was the stay at home parent and she worked.... Seriously, this is projection on your part.

The "faith" isn't right and isn't true. Religious faith is the most dishonest position one can have. Yes some of the culture is like this but not all and it has nothing to do with how true the "faith" is.
