I always found skullcrushers with dumbells less stresful on my joints, and also could feel triceps way more that way, also since my arms work seperatly the movement feels more natural

Back in the 70's exercises were performed in a way that were considered the most productive for the times. Personally I had structural issues that made several of the movements very uncomfortable. Lying tricep extension was one such exercise. Once again Joseph you've managed to teach this old dog a few new tricks thanks!

There is a lot of wisdom in this video. I have been weight training for over 30 years, and my elbows are very unhappy with barbell or dumbbell tricep extensions. For me, the cables (or even elastic bands) are much more comfortable for my elbow joints.

To prevent your elbows flaring out, try a cargo strap between both upperarms. This works great for me with a harder tricep contraction as a bonus.

Recently been finding many cable iterations to be superior to their common "free weight" alternatives, due to more accurate lines of pull. Chalk another one up.

It's not just about a 'good exercise' that can create hypertrophy and strength gains but about which of many possibilities are a good fit for you personally and your body structure. This is nail on the head type good for reminding me of the simple mechanics and how the joint structure is impacted and why I just cannot do these without elbow pain. I love the endless variations opened up with cable machines and handles rather than a bar. This is so basic and so solid. Thank you.

I have a nerd question; If the elbows point out slightly is it possible to still have the force aligned with the elbow joint doing skull crushers, if you try to pull the bar apart during the movement? In my head it would make the triceps less efficient at moving the weight, but it would be possible to have the force aligned with the joint. Is there any truth to what I just wrote?
