Great final result. I have used my uncle’s ‘83 CJ7 to hunt mulies and pronghorn on his ranch so they hold a great deal of sentimental value.

Cool upgrades! Kinda the fun part of the project, suspension performance mods. Takes a lot of patience on some of that work, good job!

I'm about to do a 2.5 inch lift on my 82 CJ5, and I'm shopping for boomerang greasable shackles. Are you happy with the 1/2 inch shackle lift, or would you go to 3/4 or something?

I like the 1/2” lift greaseable shackles. I had taller ones on before, but it adversely affected steering stability.

Very cool. Is there any chance in hell I can connect with you to talk? I have a 79 cj7 I'm having to restore / build from the frame up. I'm looking to go with a 2.5" lift, 16 x 32s, etc. I have a ton of questions if you're open to the conversation. Jim, TX

If you are going to be off roading you will be better off leaving the 31's on. You now have the clearance you need for flex at the fender. 33'S ARE NOT GOING TO LEAVE YOU MUCH CLEARANCE. If you have the 4.2- 6cyl the 33's are going to make it a slug.

I agree. However, if it becomes an issue, I will install a 1" body lift. Or, I may just go with 32x11.50 tires. The rebuild of the axles I did involved a gear change from 3.31 to 4.10. Not gonna have any issues regarding sluggishness. It actually needs the larger tires now to compensate for the dramatic improvement made from the gear ratio change.😂

It's your Jeep, but if it were mine, it would never have a tire bigger than a 31" x 10.50" 15 BFG AT or MT mounted to it. All of my off pavement driving happens on legal, open Forest Service or BLM routes and I'm not going ANYWHERE here in 2024 that a whole bunch of somebodies haven't been to before in stock flat-fenders running O.E. 6.00 X 16 NDT's at 28" tall. I've been places in stock flat-fender Jeeps prior to 1972 that nobody can get to in a motorized vehicle today, thanks to Forest Service and BLM travel management plans that resulted in trail closures over a three-decade span of time. I did the Rubicon five times in a TJ with rear limited slip running 31" BFG ATs and four of those times, I was pulling my M-416 military cargo trailer along behind me. The last time I did it, I did it in my CJ-2A at stock ride height on 6.00 x 16 NDT's. No lift. No Lockers. No big rubber. No problem. I was riding in uncle's Jeeps on that trail when a 10-15 Gates Commando was considered massive off-road rubber. I've been driving off-pavement in low-range four wheel drives even before buying one of my own in 1986 when I bought a new Suzuki Samurai. I've never run a tire taller than 32" and only did that once on a 2011 Ford Ranger that just as big a turd on the trail with 32" rubber as it was on stock 30" rubber. In truth, it was a bigger turd with the bigger tires, being 3.73:1 in the final drive with a five-speed manual. On everything else I've had, aside from my Samurai that I used to have and the CJ-2 I have now, the biggest rubber I've run in 31". I had those on an 89 Isuzu Trooper RS short-wheelbase, an 87 Pathfinder, a 73 Bronco. an 89 XJ Cherokee with 2.5" lift, and a '98 TJ. I had no problem getting wherever I wanted to go and doubt I ever will. There is a VAST difference in wheel and tire weight in going from 31" to 33" tires. That additional unsprung weight is hard for a leaf-spring suspension to cope with and you'll notice it on "washboard" dirt "fire roads" you often have to run in order to get to a "real Jeep trail." When you get to that real Jeep trail, the extra inch of clearance you gain by running a 33" tire over a 31" generally doesn't make a damn particle of difference in your ability to go where you want to go, but that extra weight translated into rotational mass is harder on everything. It's harder on your brakes, your wheel bearings, your axles, and everything else, including your transmission and your engine crankshaft if you're running a manual transmission, as most Jeepers do. 33" looks bitchin' on a CJ 7. No doubt. But as one who who was off pavement driving as a nine year old kid and has been doing it for 51 years since, I'm not convinced they're actually bitchin' and add more to trail performance than they take away. I still think that if you're running a vehicle with a wheelbase under 100" and something old-school like a CJ, early Bronco, Scout 80, FJ 40 Land Cruiser, 31" is the sweet spot. If you're running something like a half-ton pickup of something pickup based, like an old Blazer or Jimmy, full-size Bronco, Wagoneer, Ramcharger or Trail Duster, then 33" makes a little more sense to me. But at the end of the day, if I can't get where I want to go in a CJ Jeep on 31" rubber, then I'd probably rather walk, ride a horse, or use my trail bike to get there than try getting there in a four-wheel drive. A CJ Jeep on 31" tires is more than capable of handling over 95% pf all legal, open routes on Forest Service and BLM land.

It seems like it rides better than stock. It's still a Jeep, though (not a Cadillac).
