NBA was founded in 1946, WNBA was created in 1996. Took 72 years for NBA players to get the money that are able to get right now. You know what NBA players were making in their 22nd season, less than 500,000. Bill Russell was only making like 100 grand. So WNBA players who think they should automatically just get money need to wise up and see how long of a process it took for the men to get their salaries. And instead of being counterproductive by showing resentment towards the men, figure what you could to help the WNBA to get to a point where more fans are excited to watch the WNBA, and more money can come in, and then negotiate more tv time and better salaries.

Men can't argue much without getting a migraine. I wish that WNBA players would focus their attention on cultivating a female fan base FIRST & FOREMOST before making the arguments they seem to be making RE equal pay, etc. If American women/girls don't support the WNBA how can anyone else be expected to? It took a long time for the NBA athlete to achieve this superstar status, they all need to thank Bird and Jordan for that. Still, the entertainment factor was always there, not as globalized in a way, but the sport became dynamic after the mid 70s. So, if the WNBA can reach this status, who knows how much these "women" could earn in 30 years? And we already know the answer, they will never become a relevant product. Jeremy M. Thompson - I had Liberty season tickets in the 90s. I supported the league because I followed Women college ball back in the 90s and wanted basketball all year round. It was family orientated back when the league started. Funny thing is that the primary Liberty customers were men showing up with their daughters. Not women but mostly men. I mean that was how it was marketed as guys bring your daughters to the games. Why because they were unable to attract women to the games. Most of the women that were showing up were lesbians.

Cliff D The Atlanta Dream get families and the father bringing their daughter to the games. Unfortunately, they usually only come for one game and never come back. Last season, they had a marketing campaign for men to buy season tickets called "Be A Man." I decided not to renew my season tickets due to that campaign. Instead I use an app for $30 per month that gets me into many different events complimentary. I will never go back to season tickets for the WNBA. I'm seriously considering opting out from their games. DC SooWavyyy : I don’t mind the layups, but they don’t attract female fans. It doesn’t help that a lot of them are lesbians. Men like sexiness in women’s sports. Women’s tennis is sexy. Women’s beach volleyball is sexy - even though a lot of lesbians play that sport, too. WNBA basketball is a great product, and the women actually play the way the game was meant to be played. Their fundamentals are better than the men’s. But the men are far more creative and have better athletic ability. They’re more explosive...it’s just a better look. I feel for the women, but until they attract full arenas they’ll never make what the men make. Also, this is an attempt to dig into the men’s pocketbooks. THAT AIN’T happening!!!! The NBA has already carried the WNBA for years. The league doesn’t even make money, but the NBA recognizes the opportunity to allow the women to be ambassadors for the sport. They have the WNBA’s back, but that doesn’t mean these women should be eating off of the men’s plates.

Skylar Diggins couldn't hope to be the 12th player on the Phoenix Suns (the worst team in the NBA last season), not in her wildest dreams. Bottom line....women's sports has always had an uphill battle regarding fan interest. Women themselves don't support it, but they fully expect men to support it. Women complain, but won't step up. You can't FORCE men or women to watch your sport. The NBA has run a charity in carrying the WNBA - it can't stand on its own. I believe only one or two of the franchises are privately owned. They allowed the teams to have ads/sponsors on their jerseys early on to allow for additional revenue streams (the NBA started doing it not out of necessity, but greed...hahaha!). They don't generate the revenue that NBA franchises/league does, so she can't expect salary and revenue sharing parity with the NBA. She spouts all kinds of statistics and facts, but not ultimately what's behind those numbers. Yes, the women still have to go overseas to make millions (Russia pays them millions, gives them gifts like furs and diamonds, pays for housing, etc.) Brazil is perhaps the most soccer-crazy nation on the planet, but they can't sustain a women's professional soccer league. What does that tell you about the interest in women's professional sports?

Poker (ik, but by some is still tech a sport) gives females opportunity to be successful without paygap. MMA on both sides of the spectrum is also doing well. Overall, their is interest in Female sports when their interesting. (Srry if his was a bit difficult to read)

@@iwhatwasthelastnell8829 You're talking about individual sports. I was referring strictly to team sports, and I think you know that. Even with individual sports, you'll find there are a couple of dominant women that get promoted to carry the whole sport. MMA is carried by men. There's usually only one or two great female fighters to promote at any given time. Female combat sports are still relatively new, and there just isn't a depth of competitive talent available to truly carry it. Historically, the same can be said of tennis, though there's more depth of talent. Throughout the world, women's professional team sports struggle.

No actually she has no point the league doesn't generate money in the positives ... the money the NBA gives them is all that's keeping that league afloat...furthermore if I'm being quite blunt nobody wants to a bunch women out display the energy of man ...bumping tits and damn near all of are lesbians and it's a well known secret that that's the culture that is promoted in that organization .. most people man and women just don't wanna see that

Here is the sad truth...if the NBA didn't bank role the WNBA, for a loss every year, the WNBA wouldn't exist. Skylar Diggins ends every point by saying: In the WNBA. And that also ends her point. Because there is just no comparing the WNBA to the NBA!!! Not in audience appeal and support. Not in quality of the game. I'm sorry but that is just the TRUTH.

I use to play in an "under six foot" men's league. Even that was more exciting than watching the average WNBA game. FYI we didn't lower the rim or use a smaller ball and we had no trouble making a layup or shooting from the outside. Also we didn't get a dime for playing. We had to pay league fees, tip the refs and buy our own equipment and uniforms.

NonyaBusiness! the only real thing separating NBA and WNBA players is the athletic ability to do superhuman feats. But the actual skill set of the WNBA players has come a very long way these last couple of decades. You're seeing crossovers, circus shots, threes, etc that are basically at the same level as the NBA just not as quick, explosive or powerful. These women can really hoop. They should really be trying to cultivate a strong fanbase of young women/girls.
@Israel-nb7ip
6 жыл бұрын
NonyaBusiness! you're missing the point entirely. You don't tune into women's tennis to see 120 mph serves; women's tennis fans appreciate women's tennis because of the professional-level skill set those women bring to the table. No sane person can/should expect NBA action in a WNBA game. No sane person would expect that from an NCAA game either since there's a huge drop off between division 1 men's NCAA basketball talent and the NBA, yet March Madness is still exciting because fans' expectations are that they're seeing a college game, not an NBA game given that less than 3% of college players actually become NBA players. They shouldn't be marketing their product to mainstream NBA fans; they need to be cultivating a hard fanbase of young women/girls that will appreciate the WNBA product. It's silly to say that the NBA is the only basketball league that can have a fanbase.

Shaun Cameron : Exactly! That’s why I said what I said. What they [WNBA players] really want is to make some crazy argument that they are somehow helping to fuel NBA revenues and this deserve a piece of that pie. The truth is that they AREN’T fueling NBA revenues - if anything all they’re doing is reducing NBA profits - and they don’t deserve one red cent of the NBA money. They know they don’t deserve it, and they know they’ll look stupid if they ask, but by going Public with their gripe they put out feelers to every lawyer in the country (and beyond) to find some theory that will allow them to be paid. They are also low-key begging advertisers to help them market the league better - which puts the cart before the horse. The league has to draw people, which brings the sponsors, which raises the revenues. What the WNBA wants is for the sponsors to pour more money into the WNBA to help market the league to fans so that the fans will hopefully come to the arenas - with no guarantees whatsoever. I feel for them. They feel like, being at the top of their sport, they shouldn’t have to worry about money once they leave the game. There’s always coaching, and if they look good, they can be actresses, media moguls and businesswomen. There was a time when NBA players worked in the offseason by necessity, and many of them kept working because they either lived those jobs or made more money working than playing hoops. But the league wouldn’t be what it is without those guys. They all played a part in growing it to where it is now. Former Sonics guard John Johnson (R.I.P.) sold me my first BMW. His championship teammate “Downtown” Freddie Brown was an executive with Seattle First National Bank, which later became Bank of America. I think he JUST retired a few years ago. Honestly, the NBA players from all of the past decades have a much better argument than WNBA players for getting a piece, especially those who never made a million dollars in their entire career. They probably should be getting some small checks for life from these crazy multi-billion-dollar revenues, but that’s what their pensions are for. Maybe their pensions grew under the new deal. That would be worth investigating.
@shauncameron8390

You mean Dennis Johnson. But yeah! In all fairness, the NBA itself wasn't big enough yet to grant million-dollar contracts. But unlike the WNBA's to date, the NBA became a profitable league by year 22.

Skylar's one of my favorite wnba stars (out of 4) but she sounds pretty jealous according to those quotes. 1st of all the nba's been around decades longer than the wnba, has 18 more teams than the wnba, and to be honest a lot more entertaining highlights than the wnba, beyond just dunking so that's why it's viewed more, has higher fan attendance and that's why nba athletes make more. She should be thankful the US even has a professional women's basketball league. I'm a guy, but I'd be very thankful if I had the opportunity to play basketball as a profession even if I were making at least $50,000 a year, which is enough to support myself and possibly if I choose to have a family in the future cause I love basketball even though I've never been paid to play it one day of my life. I'm 29 as of 2018, and stuck at a basic grocery store job with working with some high-school aged employees. So she's got it great compared to me and she's one year younger than me.

Skylar Diggins needs to understand that there is a huge disparity in revenue from the NBA as compared to the WNBA. That will always be the case. Men will support women's basketball only up to a certain point and that's it. We want to see high-flying dunks, physical play, superior athleticism and other things associated with the men's game. If the WNBA is to be a more successful entity, Women have to support women's basketball. Period. If women don't go out and attend games, it will never be as popular as the NBA. Women have to act as if there is a sale at Macy's when attending WNBA games. Unless this kind of enthusiasm and fervor takes place amongst women for women's sports, the WNBA will always be relegated to where it is now. If you want the WNBA to flourish, get the masses of women to support it.
