Due to a medical emergency, I was flown flew from Great Barrier island to Auckland airport in New Zealand In one of these. 94 kms over the sea the whole way. It had clam shell doors in the rear below the motor and was set up for stretchers etc. Amazing medical staff and a great outcome. I was 11years old at the time and I am now 65. Fantastic experience and I remember the air craft in my 11 year old mind as otherworldly. My father was a pilot, light aircraft, I remember pestering him to get rated to fly this aircraft.

That’s a really cool story. These are really great and very capable aircraft. Those rear doors below the engine were for the main gear wheels when retracted. All the later model Skymasters, after 1973, had the clam shell entry door. Thanks

I’ve flown hundreds of hours in the 337. Great aircraft with great visibility and fun to fly. Most of the maintenance gripes are from people comparing it to a single. This is a complex multi, and maintenance will be equivalent to other multis.

I'm looking at one myself, here, actually. Would you say prices have gotten gnarly on them, too? I remember seeing them on trade a plane a year or two ago for 55k all day (depending on plenty of things obviously) and now it's just a few of them all 70's or more. Still seems like a bargain of an airplane compared to anything else. I'm no longer interested in getting bent over for a super cub or 180, so this with its stol performance seems like the ticket.

Being an air force brat I first learned of these as the O2, it was only much later I realized these were primarily civilian aircraft, and overwhelmingly my favorite piston prop plane of any brand. I don't know why they weren't more popular, flown correctly they are one of the safest private planes going, and looking cool doesn't hurt either.

Thanks for the great video! People I know operating 337's are always griping about maintenance issues, and the cost of these. In my opinion, these people have become complacent, and have allowed themselves to forget the basic tenet of the 337, which is safe, engine-out performance in a light, reasonably-priced twin. Because engine failures are rare on any well-maintained model, we allow ourselves to forget that this is why we are paying the extra to fly the 337, particularly in airwork down low, where we may not have time to recover in a traditional twin if an engine were to fail. The other issue, of course is the noise footprint, and here the detractors do have a point. Regrettably, there are several airports in the UK that specifically do not allow Skymasters to operate there, though in my opinion these airports should ban Piaggio Avantis as well.
@roughsurface

Maintenance can be a problem, especially with some models. My normally aspirated is probably the simplest of all models, the maintenance has been very typical for a good solid light twin. No surprises once you know the plane. Folks will go out and buy a seedy old Skymaster and then complain about the maintenance, what do they expect, it is a complex airplane and you can't let them just sit. They have to be flown and maintained. They are simple to fly and buy and that is what gets most folks in trouble, they want to maintain it like a 172. Great airplane and very economical for a light twin.

In the 60s we called them the push/pull or the suck and blow. When we demoed one we would feather the front engine, trim the nose down a tad and push up the power on the rear motor which made it looked like it hardly slowed down at all. We sold one to a 67 year old new pilot.

I'm waiting for someone to drop a couple Austro-TDI FADEC motors into the 337P. Change the rear engine cowlings and add MT 5 blade composite props. G1000 glass, radar/flir pod, and BRS. Would be an amazing, safe 4 place, long haul aircraft. If I had the $$$'s I'd start it tomorrow.
The only negative thing Ive ever heard about the 337 was you couldn't visually see what was going on with the rear engine, currently I believe that could be remedied with a small remote automotive type backup camera mounted on one of the vertical tails.I always thought the 337 would be a good candidate for a conversion to a pair of Continental IO-470 engines somewhere in the 240-260 HP range, they don't have near as many AD's as the O-360 engines, and the extra HP would've probably been useful.
@roughsurface
5 жыл бұрын
The engines are IO-360 or TSIO-360, 210 and 225 HP, depending on the model. These engines don't have much in the AD line. You may be thinking of the Lycoming. The rear engine has never been an issue for my Skymaster as far as seeing it. Can't see the front engine either with the cowl and all. I assume you are referring to the prop, but even that has not really been an issue as you can hear everything it's doing.

No. This does have some Cessna SID inspections related to aging aircraft but there have been no wing failures that weren’t attributed to overstress. In fact, even with this recent airworthiness directive regarding Cessna wing strut lower attach I don’t think there’s ever been a design or age related failure of strutted Cessna wing, ever. Beechcraft, on the other hand. The wings are cantilever, of course which makes them more difficult to make strong. The King Air has the wing bolts in tension in bathtub fittings. What do bathtubs do? They fill up with water. What do bolts in tension do? They fatigue unless they are preloaded and defect-free. That Beech design is a throwback to the Beech 18. Same as the DC-3. They designed them so you could have it on gear with engines installed and everything and just wheel it outside the factory and bolt the outer wings on. You don’t want to use traditional wing fittings in double shear like Cessna because then you have to have a gap between the wing and wing stub and a bunch more fairings. Douglas did it ugly and had external flanges with a zillion small bolts. If a few failed, no biggie. But Beech used four bolts per wing.. meaning if one failed, the rest likely would in very short order. They fixed it with the 1900.. one solid wing plank right through. Quite a heavier airplane and in airline service you can’t mess around with inspecting bolts and fittings all the time. But the King Air still uses it.. over 80 years later.

I love the look of the configuration but the aircraft has so many flaws and has killed people. Pusher/pullers just aren't all they are cracked up to be. Rear prop has a lot of ineffeciency because it's in the wash of the prop in front of it. On the original 337's it was hard to tell if the rear engine failed and it has failed on pilots and stalled them out of the sky ending in fatalities. Cessna installed an idiot light so if you lose the aft engine a big light would come on the panel and warn the pilot. Noisiness, gear complexity, maintaince, etc. issues are a lot to consider. Most pilots who fly the 337 won't be terribly impressed and that is most likely why the 310 and 414/421 etc. series of Cessna twins took the lead in popularity.
@Bartonovich52
5 жыл бұрын
Rear prop has inefficiency? Rubbish! The rear engine is actually more efficient than thd front one. That’s why the service ceiling on the rear engine is about 2000 feet higher than the front engine. There’s a huge high pressure mass of air at the rear of the fuselage it takes advantage of. There’s no light to tell you the engine is out, either. Just lead with the rear throttle and you’ll know its running. The 310 was why Cessna made the 337. Cessna pilots were going up the 210 and then going over to Piper or Beechcraft or Grumman with their more economical and docile twins... or they were dying with the 310s excessive power and nasty single engine characteristics. The 421 was a King Air 90 on a beer budget and the 414 was the same plane with like half the power. They weren’t truly capable until the 425... and if it’s not capable, best stay VFR and maneuverable with the 337. I’ve done things with the Skymaster that no Golden Turkey could ever hope to do.

But it’s the *WRONG* foot. Think about it. Rear engine fails. You basically have a large single engine tractor aircraft going slow at a high power setting at a high angle of attack. What rudder input do you need? Every student pilot will say right rudder right rudder right rudder. Which is your dead foot? The left one. Which engine does the left throttle and prop lever control? Yep... your front engine!! The rear engine produces hardly any right turning tendencies owing to the lack of structure in the propwash. *Always identify failures with instruments and verify with throttle response!!*

Over 1,000 hours on the 337 and never one engine failure. I’ve got 1500 hours on the King Air 350 and I’d gladly take each into the air... respecting their individual capabilities (ie... not going to go plowing through ice in the 337 just like I’m not going to go into tight valleys and terrain with the 350.
