Currently studying a course in game design, and the main reason why you don't see mapping tools in games nowadays is because nobody has time to implement what is effectively an entire second game inside the first. Think about how often modern games are released before they've been polished. The devs don't have time to add bonus tools because they're already scrambling to meet impossible deadlines. And since very few large studios plan on maintaining their games for more then a few years, it just stops being worth it. Skyrim and TF2 are the AAA exceptions for a reason.

And are alive for so long for a reason too. And there is another reason as for _why_ they don't really bother to add these things. Money. It adds on expenses and time to release the developer tools to the public all while leaving no room for monetisation of said tools without getting people mad.

I've been working on an overhaul mod for a game called Sifu, and it's extended the amount of enjoyment I've had with the game by a ton. If it wasn't for that i'd probably have moved on to some other game since the devs are so slow at pushing out new content. It also doesn't help that the content that is there is so poorly balanced and basic that it gets dull playing after a while. So even being able to just adjust numbers and move things around can extend the lifespan of a game. Really wish more games encouraged modding. Especially since there's tons of games (Like TF2 and every Elder Scrolls game) that probably would have crashed and burned a decade ago if not for modders stimulating the fun economy.

Fistful of Frags is a great mod, but might i also recommend Pirates Vikings and Knights 2? Its a really stylized and beautiful sourcemod full of tons of character in lots of aspects. The gameplay was the de facto melee game for years before mordhau, the voice acting is charming, and the ability to add maps kept it alive for years. Excellent source multiplayer mod, cant recommend it enough

I hate how TF2 modding got gutted by sv_pure 1. It feels like Valve didn’t even try when considering what game modifications are considered cheating. Like, anything having to do with viewmodels should not be considered cheating. I should not have to load an alternative map in single player, to then be able to go into Casual with my mods, only to have Snipers arms and hands become a eldritch monstrosity after 2 rounds.

A developer of Dead Space explained the decision to make the game's FOV really low with the increased horror factor. Is it your opinion that players should have been given the option to change the FOV anyway? In the same vein, Dark Souls has no difficulty options in order to give every player the same challenge and therefore the same level of accomplishment. Do you think that this was a bad decision?
@kalukagamingfellaguy

Third person games provide greater viewing angles naturally so it usually matters quite a bit less, and because Dead Space is an extremely slow game by design I don't think for most people it would matter. FOV is mostly a concern in fast FPS games where your aspect ratio has a great impact on what you can see. That being said, Dead Space and Dark souls are different. As far as difficulty is concerned for a single player game howeer, having an option doesn't impact the experience of anyone but the player. If someone wants to increase the gamma on their monitor to make enemies more visible, just for example, in Dead Space, that's their right as the licensee/owner of their copy. I don't think Dark Souls in particular really benefits from a difficulty slider considering you can make the game easier or harder by the choices you make in your build, but you can say the same for something like Morrowind (and lots of other RPGs) which has a very adaptive difficulty slider and that gives players a huge degree in freedom for their game. I've been playing MW and have been adjusting my difficulty as I go on to suit my character's strengths and my increasing skill at the game and I appreciate the ability to make the game harder as I see fit. DS/ER might not have a built in setting for it, but they do have pathways that functionally do the same thing through your choice in gear/stats. Dark souls/Elden Ring are also different though, in that they're multiplayer and the multiplayer requires a lot of things to Replicate exactly for the co-op and pvp to work, so you'd either have to separate players by difficulty level or people would have disconnects either in their head or literally in the software depending on the other person's difficulty.

@@kalukagamingfellaguy This is very interesting. At first you say that an FOV slider is not important for Dead Space, but then you say players should have the option to change the gamma in order to make the game easier. This is contrary to your other point that having an option doesn't impact anyone but the player (I assume you mean the one player who uses the option). By this logic there should be an option to change any function in the game to suit the player's desire. This includes the FOV in Dead Space, which definitely makes the game easier when increased. The thing is, simply having options like this available *does* affect players. Lowering the difficulty from the game's menu is an extremely quick and easy way to overcome any challenge. Many players are way less likely to even consider getting better at the game if they have such an easy way out. It's a balancing act for developers. Just how much freedom is good for the *average* player? What options, when changed, compromise the vision the devs have for the game? Some of these visions demand less options, others can allow themselves more. It's true that some games should have more options like you said considering FOV in fast shooters. I also think more games should come with a dev console. It's an acceptable risk to take as it's a natural barrier for most casual players who would break their own games with these advanced options.
@kalukagamingfellaguy

@@MrSchnorkel I still maintain that player freedom of products they purchase or pay towards is important, and if someone wants to lower their difficulty to get over a challenge in a single player game I don't care if they do. If they don't want to get better that's not my problem. And I only said I care less about Dead space cause FOV is far less likely to cause physical discomfort in third person games.
@MrSchnorkel
Жыл бұрын
@@kalukagamingfellaguy Okay, let me get this across. If I want to change the FOV in Dead Space I should definitely get the option to do that, right? Because more freedom for the player is better and me getting this option doesn't hurt anyone, correct? By your own logic you should support me in getting this option and not just say that Dead Space doesn't really need it. If anyone wants anything for whatever reason, they get it. On the other point: Sure, you as a single player don't have to care if others misuse options, but the developers *do* have to care. They develop the game for all of their players, not just you. If a change is a net negative for the playerbase, they won't implement it. As i explained, too much freedom can indeed be that net negative.
