Hi Gordon,When i used to do any thing on my truck,(retired now) I used to put a bit of copper slip on them,Even if it was a nut & bolt, I would put some on just in case i had to take it off some other time, Love the videos.

Thanks for the video. I was considering upgrading the manual slacks on my old bus to automatic, because you have to get up on ramps at least to get to them, but after seeing this I'm not sure it'll be worth it.

Love the videos most won’t show lil things like this but I do have a question “does one need to release the air from it or can the brakes be set or needs release
@thebaycuddy

I’m assuming release bc when you test it it should be released to adjust

are those ratchet assemblies available separately from an arm assembly, or do you have to buy the whole ball of wax to replace them? even though you can obvious clean them to restore function, i would imagine some just are too far gone at times.
@57bagre

I don't think you can buy that piece alone. The slack adjuster does cost a bit and takes a bit of time to change, this is just a quick fix that usually will get you buy and save time and money if it's not in too bad of shape.

good vídeo i just have a question mine it's not turning on the adjustment at all some how it's stock you think it could be the little part you took of I mean the little ratchet piece can cause the adjustment not to turn at all? thanks for the help
@57bagre

I don't think so, but you can try taking it out and spraying WD-40 or something like that in the hole and work a stiff piece of wire around in there, blow compressed air and just keep going back and forth and you might get it freed up.

Do these just remove easily? Also If I remove one can I loosen the slack adjuster? I have one brake locking when empty.

Better look at my video on adjusting brakes before taking that piece off. kzitem.info/news/bejne/soWDqJaQnoViiXo Also if you have a brake grabbing, you might have axle oil or grease leaking onto the brake shoes. I have videos on that too. Thanks for watching.

Oh geeze. Need a special tool to measure this or that in a special way. These machines are not that fussy, or precise. If they lack anything it is usually an operator with common sense.

I agree, I don't want to ignore anything that might be dangerous or expensive down the road but some people are just too touchy about specs when they are just a guide line, brake adjustments are not as critical as valve adjustments.

Look in my playlist of truck repair. Is it air brakes or hydraulic brakes? I also have a video series on a dump truck with hydraulic drum brakes, cleaning oil off the brakes and adjusting when finished.

They are a bit pricey, I can clean it a lot faster than going to buy one and then getting set up to change it.

Gordon, the CDL school that I'm going to says to tighten the adjuster until tight then back the nut off 1/2 a turn counter clockwise. I bet that's what the other person is talking about. You have real life experience and I'd stick with that. I bet every brake system is a bit different on each year/model of truck as well. Thanks, your videos are helping me understand the mechanics of trucks.

The half turn is a good quick reference but the best way to check the adjustment is to measure the rod travel, 1" to 1-1/2" (2'max) on a 30 sq" chamber or 3/4" to 1-1/4" (1-1/2"max) on a 20" chamber.
