You said you only put 6 yards of line on it 🙃 that's the bottom of the spool, drag pressure increases dramatically from full spool to the bottom of the spool, it's physics, so this is an unfair test. You also could have just turned the spool with your hand for a comparison, from all the other videos of it that's what they did and everyone said the low drag pressure had been fixed.

Yea we've kinda gone over that in the comments. It's fixed to a degree. Post the link to the test where they said it's fixed. I wanna see it. I was expecting it to be like the ht-100's bc lack of line didn't make that huge of a difference on those. This video needs a update. Got any recommendations on how you want me to test it? I do appreciate you watching until the though.

You need a live liner. They are amazing! I have a Penn Fierce 6000 live liner (baitfeeder). It doesn't have nearly that much max drag, but it is a great real for catfish and carp,

I gotchya, I've played with the fierce a Lil bit because my brother has one. They seem nice. I have a spinfisher v 6500 LL (back left in the video) that I use for catfishing. I used to use it heavily for salt water but as I get newer gear the old saltwater stuff gets reduced to catfishing /surf fishing gear because of the harsher environments.

Drag is also dependent on the amount of line on the spool.. Ex if you have 1/2 a spool you would have twice the drag than you would with a full spool! So if you only spooled a few yards of line onto the reel, then you would A LOT more drag than you would with a full spool. Not trying to be a smartass but its true, look it up 👍

No I completely understand and that crossed my mind. I have a digital fish scale that I was gonna use to test it last week. I was gonna use it to test it like i did in the video and then after I got it spooled also to exact numbers. When I turned the scale on it was all wonky and not giving the right numbers. I haven't given up on it or anything. It's a fantastic reel. I was just hoping it was gonna be loose like the ht-100's while still capable of those high settings.

I tested the drag once I got It spooled up and it measured at less than a pound. So you were right. However I hooked up with a solid fish this past weekend and the drag was delayed. 10 pound sharpnose and it still bent the rod quite a bit before pulling any drag. I had it in a rod holder tho so I wasn't able to give it the true test.

I had the same issue with high minimum drag with my old Spinfisher 5 8500, it was always way too high for live baiting - all the slammers are even worse. Ended up getting a Fin Nor Lethal LT100 and the drag is like butter from almost no drag to 45lb.

Some essential Physics were left out from the tests as far as spooling the reels before the test (see comment by YakItUp).... Anyhow, do people really leave their reels unattended not seated ina a rod holder-ESPECIALLY if you're fishing with a 7500 or an 8500 or 10500 size reel????

@@DIXONLINE Perfectly happy. I've used a Shimano Spheros SW A 18K and a Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 for a while now to compare it to. The Slammer III has the best drag, heaps of retrieval power, and is the toughest of the bunch. The Slammer III is completely suited to my shark fishing from piers and beaches. Whereas, the Spheros has a buttery smooth retrieve and casts somewhat further (I use it for surface irons on tuna/yellowtail trips). And the Spinfisher is marginally behind the Spheros and the Slammer in all areas. Frankly, they are all extremely nice reels.

Thanks for the insight! I've been considering a couple spheros for inshore. The specs for that price point are looking good but I'm such penn fanboy idk if I'll be able to bring myself to do it lol

I think your confused with the minimum drag and the friction from the lower seal of the spool. Ie. Remove the lower seal and you reel will freed spool as you expect. Obviously this eliminated the ipx6 rating for the spool only

No i get what youre saying. At the icast demo they said it was "fixed". Once I took it out and fished with it and had a full spool put on it was alot better than the slammer 3. Still delayed but it was a upgrade for sure on the low setting compared to the last series.

why would you leave a $300 reel unattended plus you probably have at least a $200 rod to go overboard. sounds like you need a reel with a clicker! no comparison battle

"That hurt my feelings"😂 Definitely not the best for live lining. Gotta go with the spinfisher for that. But still wish they used lighter drag for it, idk why they have it so damn tight! yea dude, its like you spend all that money and the issue wasn't fixed. idk if you were looking at the 8500 hs specifically for your next purchase but this week I'll have a specific number on that checking the poundage on a digital scale in a video for the least amount of drag and for the slaiii10500 as well. I have a spinfisher 5 6500 with a LL switch that's about worn out. I'm gonna try and get 1 more summer out of it before I retire it for the spinfisher 6. I just haven't been able to completely kill one yet lol. idk what it is specifically in the mechanics that make the drag that heavy when its that loose in the IV but what whatever it is it certainly has something to do with whatever makes it achieve those crazy HIGH drag settings. THANK YOU for watching till the end and enjoying it and also thanks for letting me know that the least amount of drag topic is something people are actually looking for. I couldn't seem to find anyone covering that topic so i figured id put it out there. You gonna do some deep sea jigging from the kayak? you a bad MAN!

For proper testing, the spool must be filled. Drag increases with reducing line on the spool, thats why when u set the drag with a full spool, its set to 1/4 (some people uses 1/3) of the breaking strength of the the line on the reel. So, if you're spooling with 30lb line, you will set the drag to be 10lbs when full. As the line comes off the spool the drag increases. Nearing the end of the amount of line on the spool, the drag increases significantly. So this video is really bogus given only a few yards were placed on the reel so a completely free drag would STILL have a significant amount of drag with an almost empty spool of line on!!! . Slammer Reels are Great they top notch. If not a slammer, get a Spinfisher, they have little less drag, cheaper and they are dependable and can take the beating. Hope this helps and changes your mind.
