For an introduction to the opening, watch this video on the basics: • Introduction to the Sl...
The Exchange Slav is one of the most annoying, if not the most annoying openings for the Slav/Semi-Slav Defense player to face. It basically kills any chance for black to play for an advantage or any sort of imbalance in the position.
That means that it’s a great weapon for weaker players to use against stronger ones, and that it’s great for killing counter play and making tactically strong players handicapped because the chance of a tactic occurring is extremely low.
Even so, you can win with either side, there are always traps, tricks and ideas to complicate things, but it’s just much harder than in other variations of the Slav.
Learning the opening will provide you with a very powerful d4 weapon. A universally good opening which is easy to play (not fun though) and which could render hours of prep put in by your opponents obsolete.
It was and it is being played by the worlds strongest, which is proof that it’s a sound and solid opening. On their level most games end in draws, but on anything below Fm, it’s anyone’s game.
I hope you learn it and use it well!
