"You have to be willing to admit to a horror. Admitting to a horror means that you're saying that you are not separate from what America did; you are not separate from America is. Instead, admitting to the horror makes you American. ... [Some think] saying America did a bad thing is saying America is bad. This is not true. Saying that America did a bad thing is key to helping America heal." I love it. Very powerful and almost spiritual in its themes of healing and repentance.

@@zachariahlloyd6043 Georgia: That reason was [the North's] fixed purpose to limit, restrain, and finally abolish slavery in the States where it exists. The South with great unanimity declared her purpose to resist the principle of prohibition to the last extremity. Mississippi: Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth… These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. Texas: The servitude of the African race, as existing in these States, is mutually beneficial to both bond and free, and is abundantly authorized and justified by the experience of mankind, and the revealed will of the Almighty Creator, as recognized by all Christian nations. The ending was good. No problem learning more and honoring those who sacrificed willingly or not. As for the north being innocent, that is as he said to simplified. I don't thing the high school history class taught that exactly. Perhaps some elementary schooling did. The money from slavery that built the south and the north also built parts of Africa, Europe, Caribbean, and South America. No country is without sin including the northern states. I agree that learning more about things done wrong is probably a good thing. I do not agree that what happened to George Floyd has much to do with slavery. It is so many degrees separated. A butterfly flaps his wings in Brazil and we got a cyclone in Bangladesh.

...Not just businesses in the North but the Federal Government! ...Income tax? It was tried but didn't take hold till early in the twentieth century. Before that- virtually 100% of the U.S. Internal Revenue came from Tariffs. ...And, as 70% of the U.S. gdp at that time came from Southern plantations and tariffs were collected on overseas TRADE between Southern producers and European buyers... this basically meant losing the Southern states to a newly-formed confederacy meant losing the American government's #1 source of REVENUE. Does that not sound like sufficient incentive for Northern troops to remain in states like South Carolina after they had seceded? Oh but just one problem: spelling all this out in news media and political addresses by elected officials or ones running for office... regardless whether in the North or South -well, it just didn't play well. What was needed was a trigger, a subject that got people on their feet, divided them emotionally and galvanized them for a coming fight. A moral issue that was like an elephant in the room. Let's see... what would be a good one to do all this from the get-go... Could it be... (...wait for it...) . . . --> SLAVERY?? Of course. NOW you have everyone's attention. And no one has to know the dire economic situation the feds will be in if they don't win the war and the confederacy prevails. And above all, that can't be allowed to happen.

Slavery is the most horrible institution that has consistently plagued humans for millenniums - Americans were without doubt guilty of using slaves and must strive to heal the wounds our forefathers inflicted- and I am in no way trying to discount the suffering the slaves were forced to endure here --however- I do feel it’s important that guilt and responsibility for the atrocity’s should be shared by all participants- instead of we Americans alone -- such as - 70% of the slaves exported from Africa were sold to Brazilian plantations--approx 18% were sold to Caribbean plantations and the remainder to the states and Europe-- (mostly US)-also ONLY- African leaders were allowed to capture and enslave people and marched to ports to be sold as slaves to white or Indian or Asian buyers -- this being said - there are more African slaves in the world today than at any other time in history- WHY???

Big difference between "if you go back far enough, your family line has slaves in it" and "your family's history was wiped out less than 200 years ago by a particularly vicious form of generational chattel race slavery which led to a century more of segregation and state-sponsored racism that ended less than 60 years ago". American slavery is relevant in America because it happened in America not that long ago. It wouldn't be wise to blame slavery on everything, but we can't pretend the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act magically fixed all of America's deeply-rooted problems with race overnight.

One of the problems could be that the Bible gives us a guide for how to properly practice slavery to stay in line with the will of God. I have better morals than the Bible offers, and you likely do too. To find out, you just have to answer this question. Do you consider it morally acceptable to be allowed to purchase another person and consider them inheritable property, or do you disagree with the Bible?

We can all agree or should agree slavery was/is wrong it can be traced back to many civilizations it was not invented in this country slavery in the United States is just one of many . I can agree that slavery was huge in helping excellerate the building of the foundation of this country but the building of this country was bound to happen regardless of how fast it progressed and ultimately was accomplished by extremely smart people who were inventors and their inventions were the driving force of the industrial revolution . This country became the economic force that it is after the civil war was fought by these two factors after the civil war was fought most of any financial gain the North received from the South was more than paid in the huge price tag of fighting a 4 year war and any economic advantage the south had gained was completely destroyed by the utter destruction of the South. The real cost of the North and South came from over 600,000 lives that were taken. If you want to give credit for the economic might of this country In the last 150 years you need to look at those inventors the Industrial Revolution and the sweat and blood of everyday hard working Americans of all races that's where the real credit needs to be given.
