The Quran discusses slavery at length, and though it recommends freeing slaves and sets limits in terms of how the enslaved are treated, it doesn’t actually prohibit slavery. Slavery was a normal part of life in Arabia, and was practiced for centuries afterwards. But slavery as it was practiced was somewhat different from what we know of slavery in America. In some circumstances, for example, slaves could earn money or inherit or gain power or influence over others. How do we understand the practice of slavery in Muslim societies?
