The imperfection in another is reassuring and comforting as we are all well aware we have our own flaws.Seeing them in others allows us to be more accepting of our own and not feel an erroneous need to be something we are not. If you're not aware of your own 'flaws' or idiosyncrasies you are in trouble.

If you perceive someone as being flawless in their looks and speech, it’ll definitely make you self conscious around them because you don’t feel worthy of their attention. It’s similar to when you’re talking to someone very well educated, and not having anything to say for fear of sounding stupid.

This may explain the feeling of culture shock when one moves to another country. To be aware of one's own idiosyncrasies implies having an idea of a standard of the 'norm', and if at in part this norm is culturally constructed, then it would itself be put to the test in another cultural setting.

Like always I assume most people meeting each other online do not meet on a dating site. Or that's my experience anyway. Maybe Tinder is different. If you have an activity in common you can talk about that without thinking about the "other stuff". The "two machines" are going at max while the two of you are doing the "usual" infatuation thing, having a crush just like IRL. But with a twist since the infatuation isn't appropriate to the setting. Giving it a better shot at getting to know the other first. Getting to know someone is a big deal, even if you haven't seen a pic. The average person looks average, so the odds of being disappointed are still quite low, right?
@golfinonotturno9697
Жыл бұрын
@@Korvmannen I guess the odds of being disappointed also depend on how high the expectations have been set upon the other person (reward prediction error). Also, imo, it partly depends on which demographic sample the two people belong to (what's the common denominator that led to them meeting?) Why haven't they found anyone? Are they too niche or is there some underlying issue? I wouldn't say the odds of being disappointed are high, but I wouldn't say they're low either.
@Korvmannen
Жыл бұрын
@@golfinonotturno9697 It's difficult to readjust once you see a photo of the person for the first time after having talked with them for some time. It's not disappointment per se, just that the mental image usually is way off. Getting past that stage, the average person looks average. I'm not sure how much you have dated, but it's common to learn to like a few traits (visual or otherwise). If you had an intensely good time with someone you were in love with, you may associate some of those features with that feeling. It somewhat "updates" your preferences. I've never been interested in skinny girls, but as it happened, I got together with one anyway and now I can find it very attractive with thin without much contour. I'd say - you don't choose who you get together with, and when you do, it may have a lasting effect on your future dating.

In life, you present yourself, with all your flaws and eccentric mannerisms and endearing personal qualities. Online, you’re submitting the equivalent of a resume. Nobody who looks at that personal bio is gonna have any idea of your actual personality, and when they meet you, it’s almost like a job interview, with both of you having your guard up, asking inane questions to ferret out whether you are somebody worth taking on or just an imposter. That is not how love begins; two complete strangers meeting and trying to figure out what the other is hiding. It is something that builds slowly between two people who know each other and over time draw closer together. And in todays modern age, when we spend so much of our time at work or in front of a screen, isolated from one another, that is a becoming very difficult if not impossible. And so we have the machine sex.

Not straight away. We play roles sometimes to impress if we find that person attractive. We do it without realising. You can find out more about a person fucking them as its a form of letting go.

Zizek was the perfect debate match for Peterson in that they both occasionally say something interesting and insightful amidst all the verbal fuckery they usual utter. I suppose that sums up most philosophers and psychologists though.

I think it is important his discourse around commodification and love and how like most aspects of our lives in Capitalism it is up to us to "sell" ourselves to the world whether it be for jobs or relationships and has created an objectified marketplace where "perfection" is the only goal and we drive ourselves to mental illness to achieve those rotten incentives.

He says expressing yourself through emotions like anger isn't being yourself, but it's learnt behavior. Then he proceeds to talk about inner dirtiness and sado-masochism as something that we simply possess and have to express in some way (being yourself) in order to get rid of it. Could anyone explain me please what part I didn't understand? These two statements contradict each other.

I am not sure myself, as i am not that much into psychoanalysis. My guess would be that he sees that dirty stuff as some kind of hidden desire that want to express, just like we want to express anger when it is there. By outsourcing the the dirtyness (or anger) into a place where it can be expressed safely without hurting anyone, we can satisfy that sdesire and move on onto simply being. Both; being dirty and being angry are usually dependend on the society and not on us. Those 2 Things must be expressed by behavior that is NOT socially agreeeable. I would say, at least to some extent and of course a little anger is mostly accepted. Those aspect are characterized by going against the norm (or with the sexual dirty norm). And i think that he thinks that we are ourselfs when we are able to follow our own norm. But all just guesses.

Dear Ondrej, that is actually a question, that can be answered, because Zizek writes about that in his books (How to read Lacan, chapter 5: Ego Ideal and Superego). Basically the psychoanalytic theory behind this is this: You have three important Elements. 1. The Ideal-Ego: That is the ideal-image you like to present to your self (usually expressed on social media like instagram, but of course in real life too). 2. The Ego-Ideal: That is the gaze, in front of which you want to appear in that way. In other words: We always act for some Other. Please be careful here with this concept, because it does not necessarily mean a concrete Other. This gaze refers to a symbolic entity. (If you want to know more about the symbolic register i recommend you to read the easy understandable chapter 1 of the book mentioned above). 3. Finaly we have the Super-Ego. Here we may answer your question. I quote: »For Lacan, the seemingly benevolent agency of the Ego-Ideal that leads us to moral growth and maturity forces us to betray the "law of desire" by way of adopting the "reasonable" demands of the existing socio-symbolic order. The superego, with its excessive feeling of guilt, is merely the necessary obverse of the Ego-Ideal: it exerts its unbearabel pressure upon us on behalf of our betrayal of the "law of desire"« (page 81). By finding a space, where you can find enjoyment in transgressing the socio-symbolic order (like sado-masochistic behaviour for some people) you can follow the Ego-Ideal in a more peaceful way (like those nice girls he talked about). In short: The sado-masochistic behaviour is not an "authentic" expression of ourselves. That is not what he ment. I hope this gives you some context, where Zizek is coming from.

Well, you may be just focusing on things because you were taught they somehow matter more. The point is that EVERY human behaviour is learned and trained, but comes from an inner desire all animals have. So if you don't express that animal desires through some behaviour, they will bubble up. It's not "being yourself" it's being that part of yourself just enough to be satiated. The simpler way to remember that is that everyone you know, including yourself, if born in out of socieety, wouldn't know that you have to clean your ass, and would probably shit on your hand and toss it at things, everything else was learned and programmed by the super-ego, collective subcounscious or whatever you call it.

@@arthurrosa9403 This begs the question: Who are youWhich self is your self? On one hand it agree with you. On the other hand i would like to add that HOW we do things matters. We don't just wipe our ass. We do it in a certain way. Its maybe on tis own a bad example but when seen over many action we can see some form of temparament (which can also be seen as learned, but also be seen as express of stress or how fast you think etc).
