A large, grand tiger starts wanton killing of cattle near the village of Palasghata in central India in the winter of 1955-1956. Whilst in the region, training troops at the army research institute, Lt. Col. Ismail arrives on the scene and attempts to track down the tiger with the help of Kanhaiya, a local jungle tracker, and other villagers.
Infusing his narrative with vignettes of natural history and shikar knowledge, Lt. Col. M.M. Ismail (1915-1992) wrote about wildlife in a quiet, clipped, and respectful way, and yet he managed to hold the reader's attention without any over-the-top heroics. Born in the erstwhile princely state of Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, Col. Ismail served in the Indian army until 1965, first with the 14th Punjab regiment and then with the Gorkha Rifles. On retiring from the army, he settled on a mango orchard, with his wife Rosanna, close to the jungles he loved. He was a staunch conservationist in his later years.
