For anyone who doesnt know, it has to be romaine lettuce. Romaine lettuce is just a selectively bred version of wild lettuce (lactuca virosa) the wild version is filled with a white sap called lacticarium that contains lactucin and lactucopicrin which actually activate the GABA-A receptors in your brain. Yes the same receptors as xanax but much less potent. It grows wild in all 50 states and has no toxic lookalikes if you know what to look for. Wild lettuce is also known as poor mans opium because it can be extracted into a black resin thats pretty strong

I googled it and apparently there is a chemical in lettuce that acts as a mild sedative but those results were from a test that was done on mice, and the only lettuce which seemed to have a noticeable effect was red romaine lettuce, and as far as I can tell it just helped them sleep longer, not fall asleep. The chemical is called lactucin but before you go make salad juice just be aware that every article I read with reputable sources agreed that the effects would be negligible on humans and that, especially that the wrong lettuce was used in the videos, any effect is likely a placebo. I do think people have a right to know before they go waste food and make themselves drink something disgusting to try to help with actual medical ailments.

It's not that the effect is negligible, it's just that the ammount of Lactucarium as well as Lactucin in store bought varieties is so low you shouldnt even bother. This substance has mild psychoactive properties and has been used historically for its sedative and analgesic effects. Its believed to be gabaenergic, I grow my own and do this often for sleep and just mild relaxation effects, ive been using alot of gabaenergic substances in my life it feels like a mild gabaenergic drug like a really mild low dosage benzodiazepine.

Wild lettuce extract, or lactucarium, has long been used to relieve pain. Lactucarium contains lactucin and lactucopicrin. They are bitter substances that act on the central nervous system to produce pain-relieving and sedative effects.

I can also tell you that if you have gastritis or ulcers, you can juice raw patatos and drink the juice and they will go away completely. I was in Russia buying meds for my wife in Russia to help her with gastritis, and I had some babushka tell me this. I ignored her, and only 3 years later of fighting gastritis with my wife, I mentioned it to my wife and we tried it. Within 2 weeks everything went away, and we are gastritis free for over 4 years now. Wooow. No doctor will tell you this. But I promis you, its easy to try, and the benefits are insane. No side effects. The taste of the patato juice isnt so bad. We did half a cup in the morning half in evening.

Letuce is Lactuca sativa. Plants with sativa, sativus, etc, in name are useful. Check wikipedia entry for 'sativum'.

fun fact: lettuce is in the same family as a native plant to America that everyone calls a “weed” because it grows anywhere and everywhere in America, and you can pick a bunch of that specific type of “weed” and extract a very potent opioid from it.

… You’re supposed to wash your lettuce before eating/cooking it. Any plants you need to wash. Meat too, usually, just as a precaution. Basically, wash your food before eating it.

I think it is similar to wild lettuce extract which is used as a natural pain killer. It is from a latex it releases.

The doctor is saying this is cap because there is no research confirming the effects of this. While I’m not sure that regular lettuce would have such dramatic effects there is a plant called wild lettuce (lactuca virosa) which has been used for centuries as a sedative and pain reliever. This is thought to be due to a chemical called lactucopicrin which wild lettuce is known to contain in the highest concentrations. Other lettuces also possibly contain much lower concentrations of this substance. While it hasn’t been confirmed that boiling lettuce produces these effects, research has confirmed that lactucopicrin in high concentrations DOES produce this effect. So wild lettuce does produce this effect while the jury is still out as to whether you can get this effect from any old salad.

We drink a lettuce water..we wash it, boil it then refrigerate it. It is such a refreshing drink in the summer. I haven't gotten sleepy from it...I don't think.

That’s why you’re supposed to wash vegetables before you eat them. Also lettuce is 90% water and then you’re adding water so essentially warm water makes you sleepy. I think just speculating.

Be careful it can make you too sleepy. Nope. It’s recommended to use organic romain lettuce. Obviously give it a thorough rinse in cold water before you steep it like tea in boiling water. It doesn’t take much either. If I remember correctly this information was recently translated from previously unknown hieroglyphs.

talk about medicinal wild lettuce for the colonists in dire times-- much of the botanical life in America has inspired pharmacology and the little ones are the fun stories. Like "Sweet gum" sap = dimetapp! _The tree with the spike balls_

It is pesticides and fertilizer indeed. Enough left after boiling to regrow and respray about 1/3 as much lettuce as you boiled. Goes for most vegetables sold in America.

Lactucarium. Found in lettuce. It has a similar structure to opium and is a sedative. I imagine boiling it out makes it easier to absorb.

There is a chemical called lactucarium found in lettuce that works as a mild sedative that theoretically can help with sleep, but it is such a small amount that it has not been scientifically proven to work
