Finally worked up the courage to film a proper video...
Got the idea for this cover/remake/whatever one night when I was just figuring out the intro melody of this song. I chucked on a Marimba-like synth patch with some reverb and while I'm pretty sure the instrument is correct, it sounded kind of unremarkable, thin and just way less epic than the original.
I wanted to figure out how they got it to sound so impactful, and when I had a somewhat epic marimba sound of my own, I kind of just kept on going, trying to recreate more and more parts of the song and getting them to sound as close to the original as I could. Same goes for the mix, which took forever because I kept on making tiny changes that may or may not have actually improved the quality of the final product, you know how it goes...
This was done over the course of like 6 months, continuously adding or tweaking a couple things at a time. Thank god this song is so well-written and produced, otherwise I probably would have gone crazy listening to it so many times. Sleep Token is freaking amazing and I can't wait to see them live again soon.
I made this video to showcase what came out of the project, because I'm pretty happy with the result and I think other people might find it interesting to see what (I think) goes into a production like this. Had a lot of fun doing this and also learned a ton, if you're into making music I'd definitely recommend trying to recreate the songs you love.
Please let me know if you have any questions or there's something you think I missed, I'd love to know!
Bass is real because Dingwall
Guitars are MIDI because of the tuning, tone is primarily done with the Neural DSP Gojira plugin
Drums are MIDI as well because bruh, I can't play that (yet)
Thanks for watching.
PS: Try a tube screamer if you like your marimba's extra thicc
