He used the top end from a donor car from the looks of it. All of that for this engine is probably around 1000 if you bought it but more than likely he just got it off a car that blew a rod or something. It would be way below 10k. The engine wasn't designed to be fast just reliable. He just gave it a bit more pep. To me it's more about what ever floats your boat. It's his money and car so. Didn't mean for that to come off bitchy I can also see where you are coming from.

Krim Kram Efficient yes. You are very right in that department. But I suspect he just did it for the fun of it. So from a fun aspect I would say it was worth it. I mean we both know it isn't gonna be a bad ass car because of it being FWD (wrong wheel drive). To me FWD just seems like a huge limitation due to simply not having an ass end to work with. Personally I do like the reliability of the Lesabre I just don't like there isn't much that can be done with them. But for cruising its a comfortable ride.

zoneracer Your right for the most part but the 3800 was discontinued in 2008 with the Series III being installed last on only a handful of cars. Pontiacs and Buicks (Lucern and Lacross). The Supercharged ones never made it into an actual Lesabre and those were always N/A in there. My biggest concern with the mod done here is weather the crank in the N/A engine is as strong as the supercharged one. If it is then no problems switching parts as done here as you pointed out. A neat little tid bit about these engines is GM originally was gonna discontinue it back in 1999 but customer complaints and popularity made them keep it until 2008. This has ben a great engine ever since the 60's and in my opinion still rates as one of the strongest and most reliable engines GM ever built. The LZ4 is what GM replaced the 3800 with and is now their go to for V6 applications. I wanna see GM put an Inline 8 or 6 back in a car. Bet it would be an almost indestructible engine.

@goofyexponent
10 жыл бұрын
Swervin309 You don't recalibrate the speedo with the gear swap. When you change gearsets (two gears and a chain) you NEED to change the values to match the gear sets. If not, your transmission trys to command line pressure when it is not needed and will slam through the gears. It will eat the transmission in a VERY short time. When you install the gear set, the speedometer is calibrated automatically. because it reads speed off the wheel speed sensors, not the transmission output shafts.

You should always use either a supercharged short block or forged pistons and rods . The NA 3800's don't like to be boosted in stock form, in case that's the engine you have now. You should also run an intercooler as that will allow you to run more boost and should make your car faster even at stock boost levels. I thought the 3.8 was one of the most reliable GM engines?
@Maxmaj1q

With those mods, this thing should be able to run a mid-low 13 second 1/4 mile no problem. Not super fast by any means, but it should hold it's own on the street & surprise the hell out of some of these "sports cars"

FWD was never intended for performance applications which is why it's so funny when they beat Audis. lol

that's dumb real wheel is gonna spin to much for a sleeper u want front wheel it has a lot off wight to pull but it stops a lot of wheel spin for a sleeper I had sumthing kinda like this I had a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville se and it had a 3.8 V6 an 5.0 mustangs with light mods and 5.7 hemis and 350 small blocks couldn't handle me all I had was a interceptor chip and supercharger

I have a 2001 Impala LS with the L36 and trust me that car doesn't pull on ANYTHING decent. The only good ones are the supercharged versions of the 3.8. My 07 Crown Vic could wipe it off the street and even though it's SLIGHTLY more powerful (maybe 20hp), it's also 600lbs heavier. No way did you pull on 5.7s.

Linda Lee-Chisolm "interceptor chip?" Care to explain what that is and what it does? I have had several L67 powered cars, and never ONCE have I heard of such a thing.

I own a slightly modded 1997 buick regal GS. Stainless steel headers. Few odds and ends with the electrical. It has the stock sound. But a mean bite. I eat ricers wannabe "need for speeders" for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its a fun car to drive. I love the face people get when you challenge them to race in these cars. Then their face after you beat them.

Holy balls...look, he has the e-brake pulled at 2:16 and it is just dragging 2 locked wheels around. If you listen closely you can separate the squealing of the spinning front tires from the sound of the locked rears dragging the pavement.....that is friggin awesome.

What's with all of the people calling this car slow? It's probably faster then most of their cars. I think it's cool. The H-body isn't my first car of choice to modify, but that's what's cool about it. It's unique. I like it!

I have an 2001 Buick LaSabre Custom Stock 3.8L Series 2 but it has new spark plugs and plug wires. I had a 2003 Chevy Impala LS with the 3.8L Series 2 it had 245,000 until first gear went out. My Buick is geared a lot different it wont rev up from a stop, but tons of power haming it at 30.

I believe that Honda's hold up better, especially newer ones. You can get ridiculous numbers like 600 if you don't care about longevity, but they are generally comfortable around 450. It obviously varies from car to car, but I'm ball parking as I've worked on civics. Not to mention an 3800 weighs 4000 lbs
@cbiltcliffe

@dannymetcalf That's the thing about GM V6s. They just don't slow down. I've got a 3.4 Impala, and it's like "well...not bad" off the line. But you hold it down, and hit second, and it keeps going, and you think it's pretty good. And then you hit third, and you're thinking "Holy crap? When does this thing top out?" because by then you're doing 95MPH, and still accelerating as hard as you were at 35.
