Slig Barracks Ambience - Oddworld Music is a video by pupbenny in my Relax To Oddworld Music series in which I use music from Oddworld: Soulstorm as well as, more prominently, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus in order to create a sort wallpaper of Oddworld or something, I kind of forgot what I was trying to say them. Anywho, I used footage from Oddworld: Soulstorm gameplay I recorded in order to try to capture the environment of Slig Barracks and edited it heavily to give it an intensely ominous feel to it. It reminds me of.... like Call Of Duty Zombies or something like that, I don't know why. It just feel intensely creepy to me. A lot of people criticised the music of Oddworld: Soulstorm and I understand why considering I think it's pretty difficult to pick up on particular themes for specific places, like there was in Oddworld Abe's Exoddus, and even when you somewhat can it usually lasts for like the 20 seconds it takes for you to encounter an enemy or move into a different area or whatever and then you never hear it again in the game. I'm probably wrong in saying that, but that's what it seemed like to me and the Slig Barracks level was a prime example. I actually really liked the music that the Slig Barracks level of Soulstorm started out with. It sounded sort of like an air raid siren to me and I felt like it suited the area perfectly. From what I gather from editing this video though, that's not actually the soundtrack and is some kind of.... sound effect in the game. Like coming from within the game, like diegetic sound from the game world. Either way, I thought it sounded immensely ominous and bleak and really gave the Slig Barracks level the feeling of being like 'oh darn, look where we are! this is so dangerous!' if you know what I mean. Anyhow, as a result, I think it's a darn shame that you literally hear this piece of soundtrack for the opening section of that level, which on a casual playthrough you spend maybe 20 seconds in, and then that's it. I don't recall every hearing it throughout the rest of the level except maybe the end part when you return to this section to get back on the train to leave, but by that time Sligs are shooting at you so you probably don't even spend 5 seconds there. Just think it was a pretty neato sound that should've been used WAY more, and I personally consider it the Slig Barracks theme from Oddworld: Soulstorm. As a result, I wanted to give that noise it's credit by opening up this video with it and I think it suits the ominous background I created perfectly well, in my opinion. But, naturally, I know that when people think about Slig Barracks music, they'll be thinking of the soundtrack from Oddworld Abes Exodus. Maybe that's why for Oddworld Soulstorm they didn't have specific soundtracks or specific areas (as far as I can tell anyway), because the originals are so iconic they figured it was better to do something different entirely than try to match it's iconicness? Maybe, though I'm not sure. Anyway, so naturally I've put the Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus Slig Barracks theme for most of the video, I simply opened it up with the Soulstorm version as I did quite like that ominous air raid siren sound that just impeded danger. I had the idea like nearly a year ago to mix up the two themes, so there's a brief bit where I did that in this video. Or I think there is anyway, I can't remember. It's been a while since I watched it. Crud, I just realised I haven't watched it yet on KZitem to check if it came out okay.... I could've been doing that while writing this.... Oh well I guess, I'll open it up and listen to it now, then I can talk more about what I did because I'll actually remember what I did. OH yeah so like a minute in I put a low and slow version of the Exoddus Slig Barracks theme to kind of mash it up with the Soulstorm theme just out of curiosity. I don't think it worked well really, but, eh, I wonder if a decent mashup between the two would be possible. I don't know, I'm not an audio engineer. Anyhow, so the Abe's Exoddus theme begins 2 minutes in, or 1:54 precisely I think and then the rest of the video is literally just that. I'm not a particular fan of the way the guard towers in Soulstorm's Slig Barracks have that energy thing or whatever it is that just bursts some fire in the middle of it occasionally. I quite like them as just stationary ominous towers, but, eh, it's not a big deal. Anyhow. I better write a comment to pin to explain why the heck I opened it up with Soulstorm music. OOF, I'm listening to the video just now and that transition between the Exoddus Slig Barracks theme and the looping of it was a bit rough. Eh. Nothing I can do about that now I guess. I intend, somewhat, to combine a lot of these videos together into an ultra long 'Relax To Oddworld Music' compilation video and I suspect I'd make some improvements to them if I did do that. Anyhow I'm running out of space so I guess I ought to wish you well and say cheerio!
