Great description of grip and not placement. A lot of slingers new to the sport don’t realize the importance of having your pouch ends even. Just a change of your finger adjusts one cord longer. Great job.

After some fiddling, I prefer single strand, leather pouch and small release knot. Great grip on the projectile, doesn't hurt on the release, also very cheap and easy to replace whatever breaks. With a braided sling if something breaks you need to get another one.

Very true. I like braided slings for heavier stones, they tangle less frequently and seem to release cleaner. Single strands are great for just about everything else (and even heavy stuff if you use them right, I just have a hard time).

Good overview! It's a great place to start as there is so much variation even within a single category such as split pouches, (Balearic, Peruvian, rockman, etc) each with different pros/cons. It's almost painful in that there's always something to experiment with.

Single strands are definitely better for ultra lite ammo, I would include tennis balls in there but I shoot a lot of wool dryer balls ("Nerf" sling) and the lightness really helps woth being able to feel the projectile and keep it in the pouch.

I use yet another kind of release, that I feel works better for me (for single strand slings at least): The loop on the middle finger, and the strand running to the inside of the palm of the hand, where it meets the release strand. But wait. Both sides have a knot. So you grip both knots and then you are confident that the loops are even. And even more, the pinch is between index and thumb. And since both sides came from the inside of the hand, it feels very natural to trigger because it resembles a slingshot pouch release. You release two knots at once and the loop side has an itty bitty lenght of slack from the moment you release that "unuseful" knot to the moment the sling tensions against the middle finger loop. And because both sides "root" from the same knot position and the same cavity of the hand, the sling is very tolerant to sudden accelerations,since both sides will remain equally long no matter how sudden the wrist turns. I know this is gonna mess with spin, but I'm not that confident slinger yet. Maybe this works best for braided slings.

@@IronGoober I'm on the edge of non practising at all due to lack of open space. Consider that as a complete lack of experience and thus criteria. With that said, to me it felt much natural to let go both knots because I had a tendency to keep gripping. Some sort of prensile reflex I guess. Once I developed that technique, I found it useful for very long slings, because the single pivot point and the better trigger timing made me more confident when swinging a 1m long sling with a stone over my head. Then I saw a video of some afghan boys throwing in one half loop and my technique felt also suitable to start low and transition to a side swing in just one movement. There are disadvantages though: The single pivot point makes it prone to twisting when wind is blowing or when the stone is too thin and acts as an air vane Another one is that the release end tends to flip inside the hand, so I get a callous in my index finger, or overall pain. No whip motion though, unless I let the individual strands to unravel too long. Will go camping pretty soon. I guess I could upload a video or two if weather allows

So I have this theory based off some of your data from one of your videos if a short sling imparts more spin on the projectile and a long sling imparts less spin would a long sling be a better choice for less than perfect ammo obviously the better the ammo quality the better off you would be as general rule of thumb but let's say your throwing a flatish rock about 100 or so grams wouldn't it benefit accuracy and power if it wasn't spiraling as fast taking energy away from the projectile because of the drag on the flat sides now iv been toying with a 40 ish inch sling I made with a 1 inch wide seatbelt material split pouch and it's seems to be more forgiving for less than perfect ammo somewhat round lime stone in the 50 gram and up range would love to hear your thoughts if there's any truth to it would be nice to see a video more in depth about it or put it up for convo on slinging. Org the more info the better

That is a very interesting thought. I think I need to confirm the spin rate data, but if it continues to be true then you have a very valid point. The angular rate of change for the same speed of projectile from a long vs a short sling is smaller too, so both spin and the degree of error for a mistimed shot is smaller. So a long sling should be easier to be accurate with, but I find the opposite. It's an intriguing rabbit hole to go down. I wonder what the differences are. Please continue to experiment and share your experiences, we are still figuring all this stuff out again, and the more data points we have the better. It's not always easy to separate objective and subjective observations.

@@IronGoober ugh, am a bit sore now, just got back from about four hours worth of slingin..... but very proud of my progress. The figure eight is no good when I have a backpack on, but the balearic sidearm is really workin out, found am much better than fig8 now with that one, and don't need to take off my hat or pack. most shots are striking within 10' radius around from around 30 paces distance I just have a paracord type sling with the mainline folded and hitched three times then woven for basket, but it folds up and wraps nice can keep in pocket or around wrist. folded just takes about 2"x4" approx, and always ready for use. I think a keychain is good enough to keep extra emergency cord, it may be a pain to detach all for a sling. Heck, can keep mine under my hat in the pocket there too.

I've gotten OK with my leather pouch sling. I did braid a 7=14 strand paracord balearic sling, thing came out fat as hell! I used almost 100 ft of cord to make it. I also started making a 4 strand split pouch. I need to finish them. But I like just whipping rocks on hikes and I always have my leather pouch with me because it takes up almost no space. Do you know of any US slinging communities online? Just wondering.

There are a few online ones I know of. In the SF bay area in CA there is a small group of slingers. Apparently in San Antonio there is a small group. And in Louisiana there is a small group that hang out with Channing from the Practical Paracord channel. The online ones are on Instagram, Discord, Reddit, and 'Slinging.org'.

One question is there a right and left way to lay webbing for a seatbelt split? Backspin might be great for skipping balls off water.
@IronGoober

I suppose you could change which side of the split is on top on the release cord side. I imagine this would make a slight difference in pouch orientation. Good thought!
