I do find it difficult to jog slowly when I am by myself - but I have friends who are faster walkers than me and I often jog alongside them. An hour of that turns into a good workout for me - without hurting myself in any way. I am 74yo

GREAT test. It shows how inefficient running is compared to walking. Walking is a far superior method to both cover distances and exercise. A heart rate of 140 - 160 is outside of the aerobic and into the anaerobic system for the average person over 30.

I love slow running. I hate brisk walking. No question which one is better in my mind. I really liked your video. Thanks.

I did a similar experiment but just with a stop watch. I walked 1.5 miles rather quickly (not as fast as possible, but a good power walk) and the next day jogged the same distance very slowly. The jogging was only less than a minute per mile faster than the walking and the heart rates were about 90 bpm for walking and 120 bpm for jogging.

Me, too. I can also run 400 meters in 90 seconds with a 165 heart rate afterwards and slow-jog 400 meters at 5 mph and have a 144 heart rate afterwards.

It may be annoying running slow but, just think, that slow pace will allow you to run ALL DAY up hill/down hill without feeling shattered. You'll be able to run next day too without issue.

A canal path, being mostly flat, is ideal for training. I did a power walk at 6 mph for 60 secs with intervals of 30 seconds at my usual pace (about 3.5-4 mph). That was effective in elevating HR. Recently, I've started brisk walking up a very steep hill. It takes about 120 secs. I return and repeat 3-5 times. A useful, short CV workout.

You must have a relatively high max heart rate, compared to me that is. On my easy jogs, my HR is typically in the 135 - 140 bpm range. I've guestimated my max HR to be roughly 178 bpm. Thanks for the vid! Cheers mate

How are you calculating your HR zones? For me 120bpm being the low Z1 seems weird, I wouldn't be able to even hit Z1 in some of my complementary 25-30 min core and body weight exercises, the only time I get over 120bpm is at the very end of them and my max in the best case is around 140bpm (measured using a chest strap). That being said I have a similar experience, walking would keep me in my Z1 like 99% of the time ( 93 - 111bpm in my case) whereas slow running will keep my HR in between Z2 (112-129bpm) but the speed is quite similar, but I had to spend months to actually sustain Z2 while running.

I would have seen your feet and legs while doing this. Could see your movements with your feet.
