Are you comfortable using manual lenses or are you a slave to auto-focus??
@chrislinder9402
4 жыл бұрын
I prefer to shoot in manual focus, even for run and gun style. I typically use my Sony's focus peaking feature to help as a guide and it works out well. It's nice to use cine lenses then because of the longer focus throw. I'm a fan of the SLR Magic cine lenses and I have the 25, 35, 50 and 75 of their earlier cine run - the ones with F stops. I like this tutorial and I agree, they certainly do have a lot of character.

A hard stop is absolutely essential to set up a follow focus system. It clicks because it's supposed to make a hard stop. Not a mushy, soft and quiet stop.

Great overview for this! Thanks for taking the time. Looks like great quality in a tiny, pocketable size! It would make swinging lenses a breeze :) btw, the sound isn't the issue for a clicked photography lens. We usually grab audio externally anyway. The smooth iris motion is much more important in having a clickless aperture ring for video. :)

Update: Already got it sitting home, tried it out with a Sony A7III from my favorite camera store. Did decent with the A7III. Expecting it to be better on the A7sIII since the lens is made for low light environments/bokeh as the new A7sIII is too. Probably the best 4k cinema grade budget kit for people who'll do both cinematography and post stills with decent resolution on social medias.

I wouldn't say T stop is more accurate - F stop is basically the size of the aperture in proportion to the projection length - while T-stop is the effective light efficiency of the lens. For example, the Mitakon Speedmaster F0.95 has an overly huge proportional aperture but the glass cannot transmit as efficiently as it has only T1.3. Only the F-Stop will decide how much bokeh you get! The T-stop is not effecting the bokeh! - There are high-efficiency T-stop lenses but the bokeh is worse. This is why the Mitakon Speedmaster F0.95 has more bokeh than this T1.2 lens. So to pack it up: Mitakon Speedmaster F0.95 shows Cateye bokeh because the glass is proportionally smaller than it should be - hence T1.3, While this SLR Magic lens has enough glass and projection coverage for high-efficiency T-stop but the aperture is not near F0.95 - hence giving rounder (but smaller) bokeh in the corners compared to the Mitakon. Hope this clears it up a bit - usually higher F-Stop is difficult without optical flaws - if you care about low-light situations one should generally look for Cine lenses as they are more efficient and the T-stop is accurate to measure your shutter speed. In terms of optical engineering - a lens like the Mitakon F0.95 makes not much sense - since the argument is the speed - you are better of with this SLR Magic lens as it is indeed faster! If you want a more flawed and blurred image the Mitakon is for you. To get rid of the aberrations both of these lenses show at widest aperture I recommend a 400nm UV cut filter - this will get rid of purple fringing (as it blocks the UV color spectrum fully). They are also classified as A2 UV filters.

who is T for ? for film makers, different lens at same T.stops expose exactly the same, different lenses with same f.stop expose differently. When we film the same scene with different lenses, having exactly the same exposure saves us time in color correction.

I wonder if this is this T1.2 is the same optically as the 50mm F1.1 lens that SLR Magic sells. From the weight of it, it may be that there is more glass. I hope that the T1.2 is an improvement, since I just bought one. But I'm thinking I just wasted some money and could have just gotten the F1.1. Does anyone know if there is any difference?
@matthewremington
3 жыл бұрын
Well I see T1.2 focuses down to 12" (0.3m) instead of the 0.5m that the F1.1 does. That's something, but it may just be a longer helicoid.

When you say the lens has character are you referring to the color rendition?
@PavSZ
4 жыл бұрын
no, I refer to the overall look, mainly the look and quality of bokeh. A lot of lenses are just too clinical and images or video looks just the same as from another "perfect" lens. Lenses with character display unique characteristics to this specific lens - this is due to differences in build and optics quality.
