Saw them every weekend in 1968. They were the 'house band' at the Electric Circus club on St. Marks Place, East Village. They were oustanding: unforgetable. In any set they combined Hard Rock, Soul R & B, San Fran Psychadelia, Funk, Gospel, Do Wop, Tribal African Chants and Big Band Jazz., fronted by messages of love and social spirituality. After Woodstock everybody caught on. Like Hendrix and Pink Floyd, Family Stone resonated in their own world... one-of-a-kind, pure musical genius!!

That's probably why i liked them back in 69 and 70's they knew how to share the music to the whole world which deeply sank into my soul.I'm not afraid to say that they were ahead of their time ! This group or this band call it what you will...integrated not just whites into the music but also many other races. These guys ARE the peacekeepers !!

The guitarist is Freddie Stone aka Fredrick Stewart the bass player is Larry Graham who later was in Graham Central Station. Today The Family Stone is touring again with 3 original Members. Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini(the horn section) and the drummer Greg Erric. No drama with them just good funky music.

Came here to see one of my all-time favorite bands and was appalled to read racist remarks. Sly & the Family Stone was a multi-racial band that appealed to virtually everyone. Music has no color. Wise up people, good & bad is not determined by the color of one's skin. I've been SCREWED by people whose skin color is the same as mine, and some of my best friends & heroes don't look exactly like me. When you become colorblind you become part of a bigger race, the human race. RACISM = IGNORANCE :^)

I grew up with this band during its heyday. This is by a long shot not MOTOWN. This is CHUCK BERRY and LITTLE RICHARD on steroids and JAMES BROWN transfigured by Pentecostal religiosity. There's no shame in this game. The band invented and inverted and co-opoted pop musics.

The beauty of this band is Sly even though he was the leader, always made sure that every band member had either a solo or a singing part or both in virtually every song they recorded. It was one of the most notable racially mixed bands and left a funky impression on my DNA.
