Great video, thanks for the tips! I went out for small game opener in Ganaraska Forest east of Toronto, flushed a few grouse, I was seeing lots of squirrels but they are almost all red squirrels. I've found this in the Kawarthas also, seems like 95% red squirrels in those woods. Any tips for locating Grays? Maybe I should try further South?

What size shot were you using? And steel I assume? I’m a new hunter and was under the impression you would use a .22 and that a shotgun would ruin the meat.
@TreeCamps
3 жыл бұрын
I was using lead shot. I typically only use steel shot for waterfowl. Shot size I was using was about a 6 or 7 small game load. I definitely like the shotgun over the .22 because I hit more game. The .22 has actually ruined more meat for me by blowing a whole leg off. I usually may have a few pellets I pick out of the meat. Close range the shotgun can be excessive. I think shotguns are safer too, 22 bullets can end up travelling pretty far where as the shotgun doesn’t have a ton of range, it’s perfect for about 30 yards. I was using a modified choke in this video but sometimes use a full choke if I want more distance.

Im just wondering why you guys are so decked out in hunter orange? You do know that hunter orange is only needed when hunting during gun season for deer, bear, moose or elk, right? Like I go out with my bow and I cam be small game hunting in full camo and its fine, but as soon as nov 2 hits and the controlled deer hunt starts, if I wanted to small game hunt in the woods, THEN I would need my hunter orange. You are not required to wear hunter orange while small game hunting during open season regardless of if you're using a bow or gun.

@@kevinellsworth9318 "All licensed hunters, including bow hunters, falconers, bear hunters, and trappers who are hunting under their trapping licence during a gun season for deer, elk or moose, are required to wear hunter orange. This requirement does not apply to persons who are hunting migratory game birds, except woodcock." Notice the part that says during GUN season. Gun season for deer is from nov 2 to nov 8th, and then again on nov 30 to december 6. This is literally the ONLY regulation for hunter orange that we have in Ontario. In my WMU, we do not have moose or bear so we only have to wear hunter orange during the controlled deer hunt. The part about migratory game birds also means that you can go out duck hunting during the gun season for deer or moose or elk, and still not have to wear hunter orange.
