Super smooth switching off the differential. It's also a very small and efficient Lego Technic 2 speed automatic transmission. 1:1 and 1:3 gear ratios.
I called my dad, woke him up from watching tv and told him to watch your video. I had to pull the phone away from my ear because he was ecstatic when he saw it work. Congratulations, you got the dad seal of approval!

THAT is the coolest LEGO gear box that I have ever seen. 😮😮😮 Truly amazing 👍👍👍
Wow that's actually really clever, love the way the 16 tooth gear slowly moves then snaps at a certain torque level. Most importantly it scales up to a usable model and still works. I'm a purest and don't like modifing parts apart from a very limited number of reasons, but this is one reason I would. Thanks for sharing this :D

If you build this you might need to make some small alterations. The correct spring might be hard to find, use rubber. I used a special slippy dark grey gear. There are plenty of ways to build this gear set up.

most wonderful part is that, when gear is moved to the gap between diff and other gear, the whole thing becomes like a cvt due to both differentials. so technically this whole concept is a cvt gearbox . Well done, sir, beauty of engineering.

Wait so this is technically a cvt
@wndrz9742

@@Cobaltthefluffywagon well yes, but actually no. At the time of the comment I did NOT notice that the first differential was not connected to the drive shaft directly. But it's very plausible to create a cvt using 2 differentials.

This isn’t a CVT. there are no continuously variable gear ratios. The ratios are discrete. If you had a CVT it would not just snap into a gear, it would glide continuously between different ratios.

intriguing! now this I can see working on large models. There's a couple of nice gearshift technologies developing in the lego universe. Awesome stuff! I still want to develop cvt further simply because of the numerical advantage of infinate ratios, but I need to build a working brake. Theory is to use 3 diffs, one as sensor, the others as the two path ways. Then the sensor applies a brake to the high torque side, but NOT locking it. Progressive is the key, and so there are no actual gears moving, and the friction is a factor of the loading, not a constant drag. This way we get all the ratios, with little loss. Anyway awesome project, I may have to borrow the idea and see where I get to.
