Great walk-thru on setting up the monitor. I wonder if this smallhd focus 5 still working and functioning okay now. I've heard so many complaints about its cracking screen incidents on many platforms. There is now a chance i can get a new inbox one for cheap. But i'm wondering if that's an investment that could last for at least 3~5 years. TIA!

I’ve had 1 or 2 replaced over the years not because of a cracked screen but other minor issues. I feel constant wear and tear should last about 2-3 years before needing attention. But it’s price is so worth it in my opinion.

This is awesome and super helpful. Quick question: how do you set your white balance when you're on the go like a wedding constantly between being inside and outside with different type of light sources. I always struggle with this when shooting wedding with my a7sII, but it's the same with any body anyway. Thanks, keep the videos and tutorials coming guys, absolutely love your work.
@Whiteinrevery
7 жыл бұрын
we manually set our white balance wherever we go and do not rely on auto wb. we usually shoot natural light for most weddings so we usually don't have to change too much. the gh5 also has a sick option where you just point at something white and take a pic and it automatically loads the correct white balance. super easy and quick ;)

the monitor is calibrated to our computer monitor and not a camera so it shouldn't matter which camera you are using. the only thing is test out whether you need to drop the gain on the monitor to retain the highlight information. that would be the only camera specific option to consider.

Is installing luts onto the monitor simple as put on sd card drag and drop into a certain folder? Assuming its looks folder but havent tried yet. Thanks for your videos! I'm shooting my first wedding end of the year (in 9 days!) and I'm a bit nervous to shoot on a roof top with the gh5 being iffy in low light issues. White In Revery Thanks for the reply. I love your guys work. I actually wanted to shoot straight to SSD drives to save time. However the data rate is extremely high on these. HQ Pro-res is about 68 minutes per 1TB SSD. No way can I use that for a wedding. Way too much data. Even the lower settings are 2x the data rate that the internal SD cards capture. I need to get more SSD and start lifting weights I guess. Lol.

Who of you is using the GH5 plus a SmallHD Focus monitor? I am interested in your experience with the precision of the Focus zebra? I feel, 70% zebra on the monitor differ vom 70% zebra on the GH5.
@Whiteinrevery
5 жыл бұрын
Id use the zebra on the gh5 over the smallhd because the white levels could be slightly different based off your calibration of the monitor. I also noticed that I need to pull down the gain to -20 in order to show more highlight information on the monitor which is why the zebra levels might not be consistent compared to the camera zebra levels.

They told me that all the monitors are shipped with a calibrated lut but it is not dedicated to each monitor which means some of them can have very subtle differences but not a lot of difference. I have 2 and they both show the same result. I have seen multiple other people mention the warm tone of the screen as well which is why we decided to look into balancing it a little closer to our calibrated computer screens. The probe will be the best option for actual calibration once it is released.

do you find the image to be a little flat/desaturated even with a LUT applied? Just got my monitor in today, and it doesn't feel as full as the 502 for me. Also, if I shoot with an A7S II, can I just copy your calibration settings? Or do you recommend calibrating it from scratch?
@Whiteinrevery
5 жыл бұрын
each monitor can use it's own calibration. I calibrate my monitor screen and then run HDMI out the computer into the smallhd monitor and compare screens. I then manually adjust the RGB offsets on the smallhd to get my screen as close to calibration as possible without having to use the smallhd probe. hope that helps a little. I recommend calibrating from scratch as some of the settings are specific to gh5 cameras and how the colors and highlight information is passed to the smallhd monitor.

I don't think you can control a camera via HDMI. Only monitors with built in recorders can start and stop recording but it has nothing to do with the start and stop of the camera since the recorder is IN the monitor like the Atomos Shogun.
