Very cool stuff Shane. Hopefully Apple will be integrating some of these features directly into the Home App so that a 3rd-party isn’t required to make ‘simple’ notifications & actions happen. The ‘hardcore’ Smart Home crowd seems to be OK (although inconvenienced) with jumping thru hoops to make stuff work…but I think the normal humans just want the features/capability built-in so they don’t have to go searching around for ‘how to’ instructions. Again. Great video as usual. Thanks for your content.

Great video! For the Home automation, I’d check the door status every few seconds for two minutes, and if at any point the door was closed, cancel the automation. Otherwise, you run the risk of 1) running multiple instances of this automation at the same time and 2) misfiring this automation when the door was open, closed, the opened again within two minutes.

I love this so much!! One thing I will say is that in the 'Otherwise' column in the Shortcut is to put the block "Exit Shortcut". I believe either way accomplishes the same but we shall see.
@ShaneCreates
3 жыл бұрын
Good tip, I always forget about “exit shortcut.” But I since this is this IF statement is at the end of the shortcut, it’ll end anyways if it goes to “otherwise.” But I can see using that to refine this shortcut some. Maybe continuously checking for the door status for a couple of minutes (a repeat action?) and if it’s closed, exit shortcut, or if it is still open after a couple of minutes, execute the notification.

Thanks for watching! You can probably create a personal shortcut that runs every night at a specific time, gets all the home data you need, and then shows the result in a notification or a list of some sort.

Hi Shane, I really love your videos! I have been playing and creating shortcuts myself but some of your ideas can really expand what you can do! Now, I recently got an Eve door sensor which I would like to hook with my HomePods mini for sound and get a text message when the door opens but ONLY if I am not home. Any idea how to code for the "if not home" part? I was thinking about maybe using the wifi connection and say: IF iPhone not connected to wifi THEN....and I have done the following: IF Eve sensor Contact sensor state is OPEN Get wifi network's Network name IF Network's details contains Nothing Otherwise Get cellular network's Carrier name If Network details has any value Vibrate device Show notification End if End if End if This shortcut works when testing. Then I created an automation for testing that after a certain hour the above shortcut will run. I Switch to 4G (past the timeframe) and open the door, it doesn't trigger. Any idea why? Much appreciated! Thank you!!

Hey Jimmy. Unfortunately you cannot run a personal shortcut automatically when a door is opened. You would have to use this pushcut method and get the notification. It is possible if you get into running a pushcut automation server on a dedicated iOS device, but that take a lot more effort. I did cover that in a past video which should be linked in this video’s description.

Hey man - useful stuff as always. This may be way out of date now or have already been covered, but if this is still an issue with the wait time being limited to around 4-5 mins before it times out, couldn’t you just duplicate an action a few times with a shorter time period that kept waiting say 120 seconds until you reached the time frame you wanted and then go ahead and run the rest of the shortcut if that make sense? That also then gives you the chance to get it to check in periodically between each one to see if the thing your notifying about has resolved in the meantime (I.E. in this example, the door has been closed within the time it’s running)?

Shane, if I plug my freezer into an Aqara Smart Plug what is the least complicated way to setup a notification when the plug turns off? Something like this could also be helpful for sump pumps, fish aquariums, or any other situations where you would like to know if one particular outlet loses power.
@ShaneCreates
3 жыл бұрын
You can't get regular Home app notifications from a smart plug. So you'd probably have to use something like Pushcuts if you wanted a notification. Also not sure how that would work when an outlet looses power. Not sure if that would send the message to homekit during a power outage... that would be something you'd want to test out.
@whatmeworry2006

I tried Pushcut and Akara push notifications to no avail. I did put an Akara temperature sensor in my freezer which is set at 0 degrees to send a push notification if the freezer goes to 15 degrees. I’ve read numerous posts on web sites where people ask how they can be notified if a particular circuit goes out. They may have a freezer in the garage, sump pump in the basement, or perhaps a tropical fish aquarium. If your whole house loses power you are more likely to notice that than if only one circuit trips. While some automations are for convenience, such as turning on lights, adjusting shades, etc., knowing when a critical circuit (or outlet) goes down could save you from lost food, flooding, dead fish, etc. You come up with so many great ideas and uses for all of this smart home gear so I am hoping you can use your expertise to try and figure out a solution. Thanks!

Is there still now way to have the action work without having me tap on the notification generated. I’m trying to create an alert that will text me when I have a leak detected. But the PC notification is the only way that triggers a text if I tap that PC notification. I want to automatically text me or others.

If you want to automatically run a shortcut, with no interaction at all to text someone based on a sensor being triggered, you'll probably have to do it using shortcuts on the Mac. You can do it with the Signals for HomeKit app & Shortcuts on the Mac, which I showed in this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/poap3Wlsbpx6onY

There is one problem: if you open the door, then close after 2-3 seconds, wait for 110 seconds, open the door again for a few seconds, you get the notification that the door was left open for 2 minutes.
@ShaneCreates

If that is a concern, you could take this up a notch (a bit more advanced). You could use a "repeat" action and have the automation check the status of the door every few seconds for a couple of minutes, and IF the door is closed, exit the automation/shortcut. That should solve that problem.
