Insolation is an engineering term not widely known. It is a short form of incident solar radiation. And yes charge controller or inverters can come with MPPT option

I heat water with excess power from panels when the batteries are near charged. Charge controllers do not transfer all the power they can to a battery due to charging states. This results in panel voltage exceeding the power point voltage. I use this voltage value to determine how much excess power can be sent to a water heater. Energy is stored in a capacitor bank and PWM to a heater. Just enough energy is sent to drop panel voltage to power point again. Any successful solar system has to have excess capacity. My hot water is essentially free at camp by this method. Watch my videos on how you can build this system.

I'd love to buy an MPPT controller for $15. Where? Try more like $100. Also in a high sun environment it's not needed and a waste of money. Sure, it's always better, but there is a trade off. When they start making inductors cheaply then ok. Also there is a big difference just in MPPT controllers. Some sample only once or twice a minute, some same 20 times a second.

Synergy Files I know. anytime you do anything with electric current. there is losses. even just I'm wire. then semi conductors there is always heat! so that's more loss. its a shame we don't have superconductors for everything. and perfect semiconductors. with zero resistance. only in a perfect world! or maybe the distant future! oh and near 100% efficient solar panels. and batteries.

Nice visual presentation, but characteristic resistance is probably the worst way to explain this to the average public. The explanation of how panel resistance relates to a battery is totally lost. Better to explain the panel as a current device and the power is a product of current and voltage. You have also given people false hope a $15 controller is really MPPT. Have you ever opened one up? I think this video still leaves people wondering.

Hi if have two mppt could you run them in series instead of parallel?
@synergyfiles3536
4 жыл бұрын
It would be a waste to have them in series. Think about it. Its like a gearing system. Just like you get the performance from your engine if you have the right gear, likewise mppt selects the best power for your panel or string of panels. And just like having two gearing systems one after the other doesnt make sense, it the same as having two mppt in series

is it better to have high voltage (450w of panel in series = 40V) or high amps (450w of panel in parrel making 22 amps) from 3 x 150w solar panels going into MPPT charge controller to keep up with the inverter needs? What will give me the most usable wattage in my small battery bank ?
@synergyfiles3536
6 жыл бұрын
If you have an MPPT charge controller, than difference between the battery pack voltage and Solar Panel configuration voltage does not matter as much. If you however have no mppt, than you have to keep the batterypack voltage close to Panel voltage. The panel voltage should be higher.
@wildbillo68
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah....It's MPPT .... So which should I do then? I can get about 17 Volts to the Controller in Parallel and 12-14 Amps (Parallel)... In Series I can pull in Voltage up in the 40-45 range but only around 8 amps .... I always thought more amps was better but.... What wil keep my batteries full more efficiently with a load on during use? and- what will allow me to get the most wattage to use from the system thru the Inverter? What will keep up with watt usage better?
@synergyfiles3536
6 жыл бұрын
More Amps require thicker wires and there are more losses too with more amps. I would go for a 48V system. You can get a 48V charge controller in the market. So it also depends upon the voltage range of your charge controller/ Inverter.
@wildbillo68
6 жыл бұрын
well.. I bought the EPever 40 Amp MPPT controller just for that reason and i switched to a Joiner Box to run a 6 awg wire to the controller to minimize the losses .. Do ya think that is enough? or do I have to run 4 awg ? I have a 12v set up cause all my mini appliances and stuff is 12v so moving to a 36 or 48 Volt set up isn't in the cards for now.. It's only 450 watts of panel so it's more of a Mobile / emergency back up for hurricanes and black outs... I think the next things I need to get are more batteries...alot more...
@synergyfiles3536
6 жыл бұрын
6 AWG should be fine. You can get a separate DC to DC converter. Convert your 48V DC from Charge controller or your load to 12V DC
