Don't get me wrong, I don't hate phones. I take a lot of street photography and having a great cell phone can save you so much post-processing time (i often shoot in pro mode with raw settings), and it's really OK when the light is perfect. However, In low light conditions or even strong sunlight, phone just doesn't deliver. When you zoom a photo, pixels are smudgy, harsh and you can literally see aliasing issues all over. Big sensor means more information (it's pure math). I'm actually happy it works for you, 'cause I'm always opened for more practical solutions.

They all have their place. I recently chose to buy an M50 to take nice portraits with a wide aperture lens. I picked up a used telephoto lens, and a few others as well. I have not upgraded my phone since the iPhone 6s - so spending $1k on an entry level body and a few nice-ish lenses has really enabled me to take some fantastic quality pictures. On the other hand, I won’t always have a dedicated camera in my hand - so a good phone camera would be great. I don’t think they are worth comparing right now though - because while they have some overlap in capability - they are really two different tools for two different tasks. I will eventually upgrade to a new phone with a nice camera - but in the meantime, the M50 is going to suit my needs perfectly; and when I’m at the grocery store and feel like I need a selfie In front of the produce isle while holding a box of twinkies - well I guess the front facing camera in my 6s will just have to do.

The 100x zoom is extremely misleading on Samsung's part, to the point of being false marketing. They should _not_ have advertised this horrible digital zoom as actual 100x zoom capability. Also, as you guys rightfully pointed out, the 8K video is a total gimmick - you give up a lot of dynamic range, autofocus is horrible, poor stabilization, and you have to crop in a ton just to get a tiny increase in sharpness. I get that they were trying to keep the prices comparable but sick the Sigma 150-600 on there and there would just be no comparison. I'm not saying that is the best lens in the world but that or a 2x for a 200mm lens give you lot of room to grow with the camera while with the phone you're just fixed with one lens. And I'm not surprised holding a phone steady at 600mm is hard. I have enough trouble with an optical viewfinder. For my R I mounted a reflex sight on the thing, though I usually don't use it if I'm just shooting stationary birds.

And yeah a professional photographer wont use a smartphone camera for a gick, even if its just because of appearance (street photography as an exeption). The reasons in which I based my desision between iPhone and Samsung (only in the camera department): One UI 2.5 brings: - Continous 120 fps 1080p in pro video mode (which actually works, because I reduced the video speed to 25%, and still looks smooth). - Smooth acceleration zoom controls in pro video mode. - Audio direction in pro video mode (which works amazing). And more things that you have to search for in the settings. Things that were avaliable before One UI 2.5.

For pure video related stuff? Probably an excellent chance of that if you include an additional interface for an external mic. Smartphones have brighter screens that are perfectly viewable in bright sunlight. They can use smart watches or a second phone as a remote viewfinder and shutter release. They are not replacements for serious camera users but the staying “the best camera is the one you have with you” is true and most people always have a smartphone to hand these days. I have even used one to take photos behind my washing machine to get the serial number for a warranty repair where a “real camera” wouldn’t have fitted and saved me the job of pulling out the machine.

so I bought a Canon M100 mirrorless (with an APSC sensor) with the kit lens for about $200 new, and it (of course) blows any smartphone camera away. The details, definition, color rendition, dynamic range, is vastly superior. It's actually pocketable in a jacket with that lens. But I also bought the 22mm f/2 pancake lens, which makes it REALLY pocketable. So with around 400 bucks you get great image quality, and pretty versatile, and great to take it anywhere. So you don't actually have to spend $1500 to get a dedicated camera. A much cheaper option will still be years better than any phone out there. Not going into details regarding how every samsung photo looks like water-painting. Of course a phone is with you at anytime, but don't spend a fortune on it thinking you'll get the ultimate camera, it just (maybe) provides minor improvements over let's say $500-600 phones. For 1500$ you can get a good camera, a good phone, and a good laptop. Don't be fooled by marketing, folks, think for yourself.

For me it's all about image quality. After going on several hikes earlier this month using only my smartphone's camera (my Sony mirrorless lens was broken at the time) my photos were so bad I deleted 90% of them. The color and exposure are hideous no matter what settings I choose, even shooting in Pro mode with every conceivable manual settings. Even shooting in "raw" with my Samsung S9, I can't recover blown highlights or shadows at all, and all details are smoothed out and compressed very badly like a bad oil painting. It's sad to hike miles to an epic location and essentially lose the opportunity to visually record and revisit it later. Only in full daylight, with no extreme shadows or highlights, are cell phone photos not bad even to my picky eyes. Granted, I don't have the latest model of phone, but all phones suffer the make-every-detail-a-blob issue due to a tiny lens and sensor. For everyday use and social media uploading, phones are great. It hurts my soul to see what a smartphone does to my precious hiking photos though. Almost unusable. As phone cameras steadily improve, I might eventually retire my bigger camera, but not yet. A single shot from my mirrorless is 12-bit per channel RAW, and I can almost always recover shadows and highlights in even quite extreme lighting conditions without having to do multi exposure bracketing. No matter what I do with my phone I can't get any information from blown highlights or shadows, even shooting in it's poor quality RAW/Pro mode. Aperture settings on phones are a complete joke. Most phones are either fixed aperture or just have a couple options to choose from. I honestly wish I wasn't so picky about image quality because it takes infinitely longer to process photos from my dedicated camera than a smartphone. I want a device that instantly reproduces what my eyes see without any work to get there, but such cameras don't exist today at any price point. Much work is still required. Judging from what I saw in this video, I would be no more satisfied with the image quality from the iPhone 11 or S20 over my S9. I see the same problem of blobby pixel details. However, low-light shooting is getting a lot better with recent technology breakthroughs on smartphones (AI, whatever else), I must admit!

W3AP0N XI why do you know people are lazy when they choose iphone? It is just because “spending time to change setting” is not their priority they want to use time for other thing like doing their other real job. And as you see from the comparison, changing setting in Phone’s camera doesn’t do much, if I want to take complicated picture, I would buy a ML camera, or if I want to do real complicated task I will use a PC, not the phone. And one thing you are wrong is iPhone doesn’t have customizable setting in their apps but it doesn’t means they dont have good feature, they try to do well Automatically which Save Tons of Times for their users ! as you can see from the clip, the picture from iPhone is automatically good enough to use and they also have significant good video recording quality without “fancy” messy setting. Split screen? How many people need that feature? Dont you think Apple ask thousand customers like you and they said they dont need?
