I couldn't BELIEVE how cool the chorus was to this tune when I heard it again as an adult.
In this quick music theory analysis of All Star, I discuss their use of a sharp IV diminished chord, and how they use it in a pretty unusual way. I also talk about how we can think of that collection of notes as a II7 chord as well. I feel like this song has become a token "cheap pop tune" but in reality it's really smart songwriting with incredible production and interesting music theory techniques. I'm always looking for great songs and great harmony that are "sleepers" like this. Any artist that takes a risk like this is great in my book.
One of the best techniques you can use to learn music and develop your ear is to "chunk" information. In other words, if you want to learn about the sharp IV diminished chord, you should group together lots of songs that use it and treat them as a group. You can then practice playing, singing, and improvising over those tunes with a common goal in mind. If you know of other songs that use these harmonic functions, let me know in the comments below! Let's start to build a list!
