Their relationship started to melt away during the recording of Siamese Dream, where Billy played pretty much all D'arcy and James Iha parts. Obviously both members didn't take this very well. I know it was a bit and they were probably playing it up but they genuinely seem uncomfortable with each other, like classmates in high school from different cliques who have to work on a group project together. They seemed that way in other group appearances together as well. The band seemed to be Billy and Jimmy on one side and James and D'arcy on the other. It's no accident that James and D'arcy have had little contact with the band since they left. They're both very independent, sharp and sensitive and seemed to not really want to play ball being the side musicians for Billy's band after a while. They seem to genuinely despise Billy and his enormous ego.
@Radhuya
6 жыл бұрын
+zyxwut321 They do! During a interview in 98, D'arcy and James admitted that they find Billy a little bit too "self centered" or something like that and while Billy was talking, D'arcy was rolling her eyes sometimes.... so yeah Billy and D'arcy weren't so closed to each other and even if Billy said he loves her (as his ex bandmate) they don't seem to talk to each other so much.
@deanroddey2881

It's always tense in bands like that when they get big. The media basically concentrate on the singer/songwriter of the band. Everyone contributes something to the band, but one person gets asked all the questions and his/her answers get listened to. That person, at least back before everyone just stole music, made a lot more money from the songwriting credits usually, which could add to it. And the thing is, most laid back, unassuming people just don't have the ego required to drive something like that forward. They just don't. That's why a lot of people in history who we think of as 'great' weren't great because they were really nice people. They were 'great' because they were willing to basically push their thing forward to success, and inevitably other people get stepped on and/or destroyed in the process. And every member of a big band will end up with a halo of sycophants around them, telling them that they are really the person who matters most in the band, or that they are not appreciated as much as they should be, and so forth. These people can't control you until they've disconnected you from the people who got you there. Throw in the fact that almost every popular band is made up of people who are too young to have the life experience to really deal gracefully with these types of situations. And all they have to do is hold out their hands and someone will happily fill it with whatever drug they want. It's pretty much a perfect storm, which is why the number of really big bands that stay together for decades with the original members, or almost all of them, is really quite small. There is that thing where the first cousin of the last guy still alive from the original band takes the name and goes on tour, but that's not the same thing.

i fully agree.. I haven't seen them but from the live footage, she's pretty solid. a good bass player knows it's not about sticking out and showing off with trippy over-the-top riffs, it's about complimenting the melody, sometimes that's simple root notes, sometimes it's walks and fiddly little bits. In the case of the pumpkins, what she did was what they needed. simple as that. that is what makes her good in my opinion. I hope she gets help too, she's a cool person... just made mistakes.

Billy and his back-handed compliments. I've always read stories about Billy's narcissism but i was too young to understand but now I see it ooze out in almost every old interview of the band. He's so condescending. It's no wonder the band has had so many line-up changes.

Maybe cause he understood they should get some image of the band through interviews, through the ideas etc. And he as able to appeal by his insights, cause he was most articulate out of the whole band. So what wrong? Stat awkward and out of public? Where is his back handed compliments towards her? About female - ly?

Arlene M. Seriously? Tell me one example of his back handed compliments here? Please. Even Darcy is laughing. Im not the biggest fan of Billy but what did he do wrong here? He was pretty nice and articulate and actually had some thoughts flowing in his head. Unlike Darcy who literally didn't contribute anything to the interview. Did he blink his eyes in the wrong way or what?

Your kinda right, but really, Smashing Pumpkins is Corgan and whoever else he lets get on stage with him. Tho Jimmy is crucial to how they sound, but basically them 2 are the band.

Arlene M. The dumbest comment I've ever heard. Not here. Billy clearly knows how D'arcy is. D'arcy never liked this kind of stuff anyways and it was obvious she wasn't going to contribute anything. She's clearly uncomfortable being in front of a camera and spotlight. If anything, D'arcy was always reserved and would say very little. So Billy was just trying to ease the tension and already expected how D'arcy would react to the questions. That's why he's stepping in a lot.

Clint Wilson Don't agree with that to begin with. Billy isn't a saint or anything but I don't get the impression he is completely self-absorbed. The Smashing Pumpkins is Billy Corgan anyways. It's his vision, his lyrics, his music. Of course James contributed a great deal to the band musically but he seemed detached from the band. And D'arcy although a member of the band who was very individual, isn't special. She is easily replaceable. She honestly mostly came off as an ungrateful person who didn't want any part of the band. She seems difficult to be around. But here she is really sweet and friendly, and seems like a chill and reserved person nonetheless. Although in general she does seem friendly too. As I said Billy is no saint but I just think he's a perfectionist who had a vision. And sure possibly overbearing and overcontrolling but because he genuinely cares about his craft. And Jimmy is a very talented drummer and a genuinely nice and cool guy.

Being in a band is like being in a marriage and sometimes the relationship goes sour and it's best to end it. Fans wanting the original lineup is understandable but it's also like in-laws trying to get divorced couple back together again even when the relationship is poisonous.

It’s too bad I was only 2 years old at the time of this interview, I only got to appreciate the 90’s from 97 onward. I kinda wish sometimes I wish I was born in 1982 and not 92 to appreciate the full decade of the 90’s

As someone born in 1982 who did appreciate the entirety of the 90’s from the early 90’s alternative to the late 90’s techno scene, it was great and I only appreciate it more, now. It’s still awesome that I can just go on yt and relive it all in seconds. Couldn’t even fathom doing that in the 90’s. It’s nice to hear someone wish they were born back then, so thanks for making my day.

It's no coincidence that the Smashing Pumpkins line-up from 2005 to today hasn't really hit the heights without D'arcy and James iha. Once i heard that they wouldn't be returning i knew Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't be the same. So D'arcy and James gave the band a lot of credibility even if they didn't write any of the songs.
