Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Got the lens after seeing this review and it's absolutely phenomenal. The micro-contrast, focus rendering, Schneider-Kreuznach colors, and resolution are astounding.

I had thought it was a Pentax design that Samsung, using the Schneider name, rebranded during their foray into DSLRs with their copies of the K10D and K20D. I guess I always assumed that since the Pentax lens had been around for a number of years at that point, it was Schneider (Samsung) coopting the lens. In the end, it does not matter much as it doesn't change that it is a great lens regardless of who was behind it (and I have no further proof other than my assumptions... so LOL to that.) Thank you David for all the work you put into your videos. I always look forward to the next one to come! Have a great day.

Another great round glass review David! I knew the Pentax lenses are known for their quality, but holy moly, those are some awesome shots. I winder how it would compare mounted on my m4/3 camera vs the Olympus 60mm macro. Cheers!

Thank you, Randy! I would suggest this lens would hold up on M43 pretty well. It would be a 200mm lens with exactly zero distortion and light loss. For a lot of uses, that could be very valuable.

I was under the impression that the lens was a rebadged tokina lens. I had this for the K-1 for many years. The lens was beautifully constructed and captured more of my favourite photos than any other lens. The only three photos (that I took) that I have handing up in the living room and kitchen were taken with this lens. The lens is very sharp wide open, but I don't think your sharpness test was extremely sensitive. You used a 4k monitor? So to perfectly resolve the test pattern you would need to resolve only 8Mpx of resolution? Perhapse I misunderstood the test. I found the lens sharp enough to use with a Raynox adapter for ~2.5x macro. With the lens set at f/8 the setup was fantastically sharp with a nicely diffused flash. I found the most annoying feature was the strong purple and green fringing in out of focus areas - I considered it very ugly and required stopping down to f/5.6 to get rid of it. I recently bought an A7Riii and the Laowa 90mm macro - which is an apochromatic design. It seems noticeably sharper, although I had to sell my Pentax gear and I was not able to make direct comparisons. I think the coatings on the Pentax lens are better, however (I had the newer HD coated version). Thanks for putting together all of these well researched and interesting videos.

Thank you! If you have a PK to FE adapter, as long as your Pentax lenses have the aperture ring, you can use them on the A7R III. I use lenses of almost all mounts on my A7 IV all the time and it allows for a good level of even comparison.

I have newer, WR version and it is too sharp for portraits, in my opinion. Wide-open it is just enough soft for portrait, but once it is a bit stopped down, it reveals all skin defects that is not good for female portraits. For portraits I'd rather use old Takumar 105/2.8. Also, at least mine sample, has quiet strong purple fringing around contrast edges wide open. I'm using this lens paired with Pentax'es ring flash and have to stop down lens at least to f11 at 1:1 because flash is bright event at lowest output (1/16). Interesting, does fa/d-fa 50 even close to this sharpnes level?

Thank you and good points. The 105 is probably a better option for more-flattering portraits, definitely. For the 50mm, I haven't compared them next to each other, but looking at the results of each, I'd put them in the same box of 'generally amazing' and neither of my copies of these lenses will ever leave my hands, at least not as long as I'm able to take photos.

Is it better to buy the SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR or this older lens ? it has rounded blades and WR, metal body but no aperture ring .. I have the 50mm which I like very much..
@DavidHancock

I haven't used the WR, so I'm not the best person to ask. But if you plan to shoot in dusty environments or places with rain and drizzle, the WR will be much better.

Hello. I have problem with this lens with my Pentax k-30 camera ...it works always just with f 2,8 and I cant change it. Even if I rotate f ring nothing will change. Any advices please?
@DavidHancock

With the K-30, set the lens' aperture ring to "A" and then control the aperture on the camera. To test, set the camera to full manual mode and set the aperture to f/22 and the shutter speed to bulb. Hold the shutter button down and look through the front of the lens. The aperture should be closed. If so, the lens works correctly and there's a settings mis-setting.

I use a Pentax 100mm f 2.8 macro too when I have to digitaze my 35 and 120mm negatives! Mine seems to be different though, it is calles: smc Pentax FA 1:2.8 Macro and it has a metal body not plastic (over all at least).

Nice! I could quite happily use this to digitize everything, too. I may even go that route eventually. If you have a milled focusing ring, you probably have the one that replaced this lens.

I have two Pentax 100 mm lenses - the 1985 version which was my favorite lens to image film with and the WR APSC version for my K-3. Have you done a film on how you post-process your digitized negatives? I’m am just about to start photographing my film negative collection and would be very interested in your take on how to process negatives that have been photographed rather than scanned.

I've done a handful of digitizing videos over the years, never one with my digital work flor for B&W or slide film, but here are a couple that might get you in the right direction: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKCtuaJ6gqKYo5w -- the process of digitizing 35mm film kzitem.info/news/bejne/2G2LrquLroedmKg -- a very old photo on restoring color to slides that lost most of their color data with time.

Ok - thanks. I’ve digitived several slides by photographing them and the results were spectacular! My father-in-law’s collection of images has a lot of black and white negatives, as one might expect. I’ll check these out- thanks!
