I paid a welder to weld it for me, but it was just a 8 inch diameter pipe welded on a steel plate. the legs are angle iron.its all 1/4 thickness. I had him weld the 1in diam pipe at the bottom so I could put the gate valve on, which is much faster than scooping the lead out. looking back I wouldn't have made the cylind er as tall though, as its hard to keep that voume of lead melted withought using tons of propane. I just set the smelter pit over my turkey fryer, and was good to go! hope that helps!

+Remington Goff thanks! I've tried several different methods myself and found this one the be the fastest. only problem I've ran into is its tempting to dump a ton of lead in at once, but then I run into problems with it taking forever. I would suggest making the tube 12 in tall instead of the 18-24 in that I did. I also put a steel plate over the top while I'm melting the lead to hold in more heat.

Nice build! I’m going to copy this all metal gate valve on my smelter build. I’d rather not have anything inside the pot getting in the way of putting in big pieces of lead, skimming dross and cleaning it out. Not sure if I’m going to wood fire it or just use a propane burner. What size of pipe and valve did you use? Do you ever have issues with lead solidifying in the pipe and valve while smelting?

Where can you find lead scrap? Except for lead batteries and wheel weights!
@Milner62
3 жыл бұрын
sail boat keels use lead for ballast, you can also go to the gun range and pick up spent bullets, most gun ranges will give this away. The brass shells they typically sell to reloaders. What youd do in this case is cut the bottom off each projectile so as you heat it up the lead inside can run out then scoop the floating projectiles away. You can also seek out old fishing weights as well lots of them were lead as well.
@JohnDoeEagle1

Old lead plumbing pipe and fittings. Old lead roofing, newspaper print shops for Linotype, I also second using FREE range scrap if you want to put in the work and time for it. Many guys are lazy and rather than go crawl around, kneel and climb for a couple hours would rather just buy lead somewhere else. It's not uncommon to find 30 - 50+ pounds per visit looking for range scrap. Often times you can find a lot more and over 100 pounds in a few hours time before dark after the range closes for the day.

I've been casting my own bullets but it's getting harder and harder to find a reliable lead source that I don't have to pay out the butt for. So far the only Soros I can find in my area is roof flashing because lead sinkers and wheel weights have been outlawed and nobody uses lead pipes either. And the only problem I have with the flashing is I still end up having to buy Foundry lead or something similarly hard to alloy with such a soft lead to make it useful for my rifle rounds. Any suggestions 4 easy sources? Thanks

Arthur Hutchinson I got my lead from an indoor shootingbrange. Thebrangebwould sweep the bullet traps up, and put it into buckets. I bought it for around 25 cents/pound, however this was with the buckets including dirt, etc from the bulletbtraps. After smelting about half the weight was lead. You get quite a bit of copper/brass from the bullet tips too, which can be melted down. But ibagree, it's hard to find sources!
@ishnifusmeadle

Runescapeguides110 originally I had considered ranges a possible source but at the moment I'm only aware of one in my area with the next one being an hour and a half on a good day to over two hours on a bad day away. And apparently there's other buyers that snap a bucket up the second it's full so it's kind of hard to Warrant a trip 4 a crap shot. I do have a cedar shingle installer buddy that saves for me (free :) ) but im doin amazing if i get 25lbs finished product a year from him. Also got a buddy working for the town keepin his eye on any lead pipes,batteries(yes i know its a no no,but i just have to take extra precautions),wheel weights (some big trucks still have them suprisingly),or even lead in the transfer station metal bins that they come across. Actually last yeah he found roughly 50lbs of cast lead sinkers at the dump ha. Talk about a score.

@@ishnifusmeadle hi it might not be as heavy but zinc is excellent replacement for lead bullets just a little lighter but nice and hard easy to get (you can legaly melt Penny's for it as long as your not selling the metal) also found in battery casings , hot wheel cars , cheep tool handles , tea light candles , some drawer handles , sink knobs , and a bunch more and it melts realy easy about 700°f just get a cheap cast iron pot and a campfire or Turkey fryer or even a blowtorch works great just be carful it will eat some steels and irons so use a cheap cast iron pot I wouldnt be worried about it eating molds tho I've been smelting my zinc in a cut open propane tank bottom which is realy thin and it's still going strong my favorite alloy types are from cheep drawer handles they might look like brass but it's just a plateing look at where the screw holds it if it is a tube and a hallow handle it's probably cast zinc

One source of lead that many don't consider is at shipyards or boat scrapping facilities, sailboats have potentially thousands of pounds of lead in the keel, I picked up about 300 pounds of lead that I got for $50 from a guy who worked at one, he got it for a mini sailboat project that he later abandoned. Sure, it needs to be alloyed since it's basically pure lead but I'm not going to complain about $0.16 a pound. Be warned, you will need to bring a tarp and a chainsaw if you plan on cutting it into manageable pieces if it hasn't already been.

You make big ones for range scrap too I see. Like me when melting down and storing that kind of volume small 1 - 2 pound ingots don't make sense and are hard to stack and store. When hoarding your Doomsday lead stash it will be far easier and better to pull out a 40 pound brick than 40 individual 1 pound ingots falling all over the place and maybe even some coming up missing. With the large 11+ pound ingots that doesn't happen because they are easier to keep track of and you can monitor tampering and theft better. Imagine someone getting into your garage or barn and seeing that brick of lead. They will leave it and take something else rather than struggle with it or slow themselves down carrying it off. Work smarter, not harder!
