to all the comments complaining about the barrel length being "what's the point if it's not tactical?": is this really a gun you think you're gonna be kicking down doors in Fallujah with? It's a polymer receiver and handguard intended to be lightweight. The application is definitely for training or SPORT AKA COMPETITION or just range toy. also, S&W isn't bothering with the whole pistol brace mess until it gets resolved in the courts. Don't get your hopes up yet for an SBR-length Response.

The complaint is that it’s a waste of money for training. 15-22 half the price. Fraction to shoot compared to 5.56 and 9mm. Or just buy once cry once buy the MP15 sport for actual practical “COD” use and a CMMG conversion kit for 200 bucks to train with .22
@MikeA817

@@ltx383 All of which I agree with. When I say training I am more talking about introductory rather than "getting reps in" or skill development/improvement. I think this gun is just S&W's entry into 9mm PCC's potentially for competition use.

Thanks for this review. I shoot a lot and due to the cost of ammo, I was forced to park my AR a year ago and switch to PCC (9mm). I know there are a lot of PCC haters (see below) and that's fine by me. I love the PCC, especially the two I built that utilize the AR9 platform (Colt mags). I assemble and shoot 2/3-gun stages out to 50yds. It's great fun and the practice translates to the AR platform. As for the Response, I like S&W, and I'm not surprised to see them bring this PCC to market. However, for anyone that has the skills, you can build what I believe to be a superior---all metal, LRBHO, 4.5lb trigger, ambi-safety, flash can, etc---PCC for approx the same $$. What bothers me the most about the Response is the full polymer design, and the lack of a flash hider. You didn't mention the trigger, so I'm going to assume you had no issues with it. BTW, nice truck.

Just bought one last week. Sent it off to S&W for the recall update. Going to install a magpul MS1 lite sling, m-lock QD sling mounts and ends, BCM verticle grip, Breek arms short Flash Hider, Strike industries extended handle charging handle and either a red dot sight with VOTATU V2 Fiber Optic Iron Sights. OR CVLIFE EagleTalon 1-6x24 LPVO Rifle Scope with 30mm Cantilever Mount. Not sure which would be better? Like the fact it's a 9mm pistol carbine. Goes well with my new S& W shield Plus with night sights and S&W compact 22 with extended threaded barrel. I gad a Glock 17 but don't care about the glock mag change feature. I like the AR-15 feel instead of the FPC fold gun. Might think about a light but not sure its worth the extra weight??

Your issue with not locking back on the last round may be the same problem I had initially. The FIX: when I first broke it down and pulled the forward take-down pin out, there is a little part which fell out. I put it back in wrong, on the left side of the opened lower receiver, there is a little springed lever which a part of the part which fell out goes under to keep downward pressure on the bolt lock thingy. Locks back every time now and in 500 rounds, factory and reloads, not a single FTF.

9mm is closer recoil to 556 unlike the 22lr. It takes Glock mags so it’s a win for me that these longer pistol caliber rifles are becoming popular. Cheaper than 556, takes Glock mags, it’s viable for real self defense not just training, etc

I picked one up just after Christmas and love it, the only bad thing . . . I live in Commiefornia and it came in with a fixed stock (appears to be adjustable) and a stupid weird grip. As it appeared in the add, it looked perfect for my grandkids to shoot. NOT . . . the distance from the rear of the Commiefornia grip to the trigger is too great for little hands. And the stock . . . I made it short by drifting out the split pin then re=-assembled as short as I could make it but . . . you need to make a tool to depress the spring to re-assemble to a Commiefornia legal carbine. This state has the most ignorant bunch of fools running it!

Training is probably the primary purpose. The 9mm will give you more recoil than a MP15-22, making it a better training platform, if you are using it that way. Many ranges limit the use of rifle cartridges, and PCCs are not affected. Ammo costs almost half of 5.55. This platform can be used to compete in USPSA/IDPA as well which is a great way to learn how to shoot a rifle really aggressively at close range. It can be a good training rifle and a decent self defense gun if needed, though not ideal.

I think you’ve got these guns all wrong. The cool thing about these guns is the effect while shooting. The 9mm hits steel HARD and the kick is small, but sufficient. It comes with an entirely different feel and experience to shooting vs a .22. To me it’s the best bang for your buck as far as shooting goes for ~$.25 a round. Considering 5.56 is ~$.60 a round and .22 is ~$.07 and this is easily better for the money.
