This is Part 2 of N in a series where I design an open source OHIS compliant User adapter. See ohis.org/ for more details on OHIS.
The M17 folks have adopted OHIS on their Module 17 project. While discussing that, they asked me whether "OHIS Adapters would be Open Source?" The Halibut Electronics products aren't, but they bring up a very good point. There should be an open source design out there, that an individual or a business could leverage to make their own hardware. It is an Open Standard, after all.
So I've decided I'm going to design a minimal User adapter, and release it into the open source.
"Won't this cut into sales of HHI User Pro?" Maybe, but I'm more interested in adoption of OHIS. Furthermore, there are spiffy features in HHI User Pro that I won't be including into the open source version, such as the built-in VU meter, and universal configuration jumper grid.
This adapter is CC-BY, meaning anyone can use it for any purpose (even commercial) and is not obligated to share what they do (to encourage commercial production).
