A 26-year-old man had a hair transplant fo 2600 grafts. One month after the transplant, he started smoking 3-4 light cigarettes a day as he says it is not possible to quit. He asks if smoking will have any side effect on his hair transplant, and if it will cause problems with his hair growth.
New York hair restoration specialist Amiya Prasad, MD reviews his question in this video, explaining what happens in a hair transplant, and how smoking can affect survival of hair grafts:
1:14 - Dr. Prasad’s experience with surgical hair transplants, and a non-surgical hair transplant alternative to thicken hair and stop hair loss
2:00 - How getting a hair transplant at 26 means he has an early onset of hair loss, which is aggressive
2:22 - Other treatments available to him outside of hair transplant, such as minoxidil, finasteride, PRP, and Hair Regeneration
2:42 - The limits of hair transplants, including the limited donor area at the back of the head that is the source of hair grafts for the scalp
3:33 - How 2600 grafts harvested may have 10% attrition in FUT, 30% attrition in an FUE, and up to 90% attrition in megasessions
4:19 - How Hair Regeneration was developed to help donor area and graft healing
4:37 - How the scalp is vascular with a rich blood supply, but can variables can affect the growth of hair
4:51 - How the Hair Regeneration was first used to help grafts heal better, but it was found that it can thicken and strengthen existing thinning hair as well
5:07 - How Hair Regeneration is now separate treatment, and has helped people avoid hair transplants altogether by thickening their thinning hair, and can last up to 5 years
5:25 - How smoking is one of the worst things for the body, as carbon monoxide which chokes blood supply to all cells
5:48 - How Dr. Prasad can usually spot smokers as they age faster, and their skin does not look good, but nicotine addiction drives smoking, which can increase from a few cigarettes a day to one or two packs a day
6:19 - How Dr. Prasad advises stopping smoking for the benefit of hair graft survival, and also to prevent to generation of free radicals that cause cellular destruction within the body
6:38 - How one can rationalize that 3-4 cigarettes won’t cause too much harm, it certainly won’t do any good
6:46 - How this person probably hasn’t used wound healing technology to help his transplant, and using up donor hair is using a limited resource, so he should do all he can to preserve his hair grafts, including not smoking
7:22 - How his hair loss will progress after the hair transplant, if no stabilization treatment such as finasteride or Hair Regeneration are used
