Yeah, R23 tax for 20 cigarettes is too much for most people in this country. The policy is meant to discourage smoking but in an absence of proper law enforcement it can’t achieve its objective.

There are always consequences to all actions. When it was made illegal to buy or sell cigarettes during Covid - the black market took over and now no one wants to pay the prices for cigarettes.... Spit happens!!!

As much as I would love to see these guys paying their taxes, this is wrong and opening a door that can't be closed. What's next ? Cameras in brothels ? No, the state don't belong inside private properties. Find a better way to catch these criminals, but this idea goes too far. With half the country unemployed you really can't come up with ways to monitor factories ? Just have a SARS gate to enter and exit every cigarette factory or something.

Agree with you Jaco. Where do you draw the line? Cameras are wrongly seen as the solution because law enforcement and the judiciary failed miserably in their tasks. This country has completely lost its moral compass. Putting cameras everywhere to compensate for this is a cop out.

@@AndrewMcFarlane_1 I have it on good authority that just after the brothels, the ladies would be doing house visits. That too will have to be monitored. Since some meetings happen after hours all houses would need some cameras just to make sure nobody does some legal deals at home and SARS get their cut. That habit of doing some business over lunch - done we need cameras to monitor the "cheating tax payers". Churches seem to receive a whole lot of cash - let's install cameras too. And on and on the list goes. SARS certainly has a right to collect all taxes due, but we are not slaves, not government property and have a very clear right to privacy. Stop giving away your rights to this bunch of pathetic communists. Privacy is privacy. As it stand there are way to many effective options left out of the equation to just implement the easy ones. In the free world people take up arms because the IRS (Tax authorities) want access to their bank accounts with a court order. Here SARS does as they please and everybody just sits around and accept the nonsense. They can have cameras just after every other citizen participating in the informal economy has been registered for tax and their systems monitor all 65 million people's bank accounts.

Excessive taxes deserve avoidence! In this case, the so-called "criminals" are actually helping citizens that smoke, and actually helping the economy of the country. Making cigarettes more expensive does not benefit anybody except the tax collectors... The only moral way to stop the illicit cigarette trade is to reduce the taxes to a reasonable level.

If you tax people beyond what is reasonable, black markets will arise, similar to the Prohibition move in the US. It is as predictable as the sunrise.

Pèrsonally I don't like the Big Brother approach where citizens are monitored 24/7. The proper investigation and control of the industry has to be applied.
