Thanks for the video. You saved me a bunch of money. Replaced the head gasket on my 2011 Craftsman mower today. Easy with your excellent guidance. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Is there a PCV valve that isn’t working and thus building up pressure? Would it help to retorque the head periodically. This is the first problem I’ve had with this engine during my 12 years of ownership.

YES, do a yearly re-torque of the head bolts. Also remove the top engine cover. CLEAN all the oil and grass grit from the air cooling fins and all around the block. Also you must lap the head and block.Don't just toss on a new head gasket and call it good. Several I've seen smoke the head gasket again. Check the oil PRIOR TO EVERY MOW.

Performed this repair yesterday. Excellent instruction. Went very smooth with the exception of one thing that you actually warned about. After I pulled the head off I forgot to keep track of the valve caps. During cleanup I dropped one. Being as that I was doing this repair on my back patio and spraying the head with carb cleaner to clean it up, the cap came off in the grass. Upon reinstallation I realized one cap was missing and then I remembered your warning. I removed my right foot and kicked myself aprox. 99 times. I found some online and ordered a couple. Right after that, being disgusted with myself, I went out in the yard around where I was spraying. Low and behold... there that little trucker was. I freaking found it! Was able to continue the reinstall and got it all back together. Cranked er up and she ran like a top with NO SMOKING. Successful repair! KEEP TRACK OF THOSE VALVE CAPS YA'LL!! Thank you.

Great job again T-Bone, I have the same Craftsman YT 3000 with the 21 HP Intek engine and it's still going strong @ 800 hrs. and I would not be afraid of tackling either the head gasket or camshaft replacements from watching your excellent repair videos. Maybe you can answer a question that I haven't found an answer to elsewhere: I've always wondered why B&S lowered the HP rating on the 21 Intek down to 19 on later and present day engines, was that done to lower the compression ratio enough to fix the blown head gasket issues, or are the 19 HP Intek models still having that same problem from your experience? Thanks always watching!

Sir and Madam thank you for this video. My Craftsman had the very same motor you were working on. And the very same problem. It had just started smoking and i came in and found your video. I checked the oil level and smell first. Then ran it for a minute and checked to see if any smoke in the oil tube. Yep sure enough. I came in ordered new head gasket. It showed up next day and I took my lap top out with me and fixed the problem. I did review a couple spots in your video as i went. As you stated it was easier than expected. Fired it up and just a puff or two of smoke from a drop or two of oil on the muffler. Thank you again Sir and Mrs. I will retire in two yrs and am gathering all the knowledge i can as i want to open a small engine shop. I am still lacking on the internals yet though. Why is the gasket different? The one that was replaced had a notch cut out near the top right side of the cylinder and pushrod galley. The replacement did not have the notch. When looking up replacement gaskets for a 17.5 ohv 500cc(intek) there are 10-$20 kits that have BOTH gaskets in them along with the exhaust and intake gaskets and some small little rubber/metal round gasket. Why is there a discrepancy with the gaskets? I'm guessing this is why both examples come in the head gasket replacement kits for these engines.

On the older Inteks, Vanguards and I/C engines with the oval, upright filter, Briggs routed the breather vent into the base of the housing. With a blown head gasket, the air filter is soaked with oil. Removing the filter would show oil misting from the breather vent. Granted, this is the same thing that would occur if the cylinder were scored or rings ruined. But 99/100 times it’s the gasket

Love your videos. I am replacing the head gasket on a craftsman yt3000 model no 331977-0010-g1 and cannot find the torque specs for the head bolts anywhere.

Thank you!! Yes I wish it would have been blown on the side and I could have shown bubbles. If I run across one like that I may film it also. Yes we all make mistakes, I've made many. I'm sure I'm gonna make more. Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend

Great stuff, great camerawork too. So the oil was being sucked into the cylinder from the rocker box on the piston downstroke, is that correct? But it seemed like it was not an old gasket, and as you say, you only use good quality ones, and you torque to spec. In one of your replies you intimate it's a design fault -- they should have put another bolt in there. So is there any way to compensate for this to prevent it happening again? Like smear some of that black gasket sealant both sides of that fragile area? Thank you for sharing and preventing me from working 😁!

It is a design flaw, no you can't put the black RTV on a head gasket. I will blow out almost instantly.
