I love this review because it literally talks about the combo I am looking to get. An RB42 and the SA300. Now, this would be my first desk setup. Maybe quite the high step to start at, but it was odd hearing you that its "only" able to push the RB42 so loud. I mean sure, at my desk, it really doesnt need to be that loud, but I like my stuff loud occasionally. You may have just sold me on the 300. I was already sold on the Miccas. Now to somehow get them in europe >.

Got both. The AD18 is more versatile for desktop use. The headphone output does not suck. In fact it works great with my Hiby R3Pro's LO to the AD18's aux input. On the other hand, the AS300 has a better sound quality but not by large margin. And not quite perfect for desktop use.

Good review.... my $ .02....the AD18 is still the better option....Lower Noise Floor, THD and "filter-less" design of the SA300 are minor improvements but if you intend on using it as a sound bar replacement, desktop, or budget small room Hi-Fi....will you really hear the difference? I'd get the AD18s for the input flexibility..... and paired with Micca MB42Xs and a Dayton Audio 10" powered Sub, you can get a very decent sounding 2.1 system from AMZ for around $350.... At that price point, it blows away any dedicated computer speaker or Sound bar options for flexibility, fidelity and fun.

Sometimes performance is a matter of taste. For instance, if you want a powerful theater look no further than Klipsch and Yamaha aventage. I totally love the power of that system. Vocals from the rp504c can be felt rumbling your room and throat. Talk about passionate and exhilarating! The theater has taken over your living room, forget the cinema. The rp280f deal bass that is fast and that slams thanks impart with Yamaha's RFS technology to keep the bass clean, smooth but still powerful. The highs are dynamic, lively with good body and weight. The entire Klipsch system is beefy and weighty. It does sound just the way I want it to: it's large and in-charge, the party speakers that are the life of the party. I look forward to building my dual Dayton 12" reference subs. I expect chest-pounding bass, not that the system doesn't already impress. I'm sure this system can beat some people's taste over some $20k systems in the category it is intended for. Not for the most natural critical detail listener but for the fan of big theatrical sound from not huge speakers. Just saying. You don't have to spend a fortune to get something that pleases you. Plus, you may not realize what it is you want until you hear it. I wouldn't have thought the Klipsch would be what I was looking for, but I have to say this is what I was looking for. I expected to want the most life-like, accurate, detailed sound. I thought I wanted to hear the faintest nuance in every song, the strum of the guitar, the brush up against the mic, the singer's breath and breathing but I'm not sure anymore. I thought that was what brought speakers to life? Maybe I need a speaker that could do that but I wouldn't give these up for it. I quite like the overly dramatic animalistic power and enjoyment I get from the big horns. I think I'm an audiophile and I don't consider these audiophile speakers but dam are they amazing, much better imo than natural sound. Natural sound is nice but it might be boring, these Klipsch are never boring. They are bigger than life; the Klipsch nature is brute force and strength. Think supercar type verocity from your speakers and you're getting what the Klipsch is. I can definitely understand why these were Guttenberg's speaker of the year 2018. Don't forget to pair these with Yamaha aventage receiver. This system kills it with the Klipsch speakers, fantastic!

Here's the problem. They took out the optical and the 3.5mm. No optical means no use with TV for the people this might help the most. So maybe they have a better sounding amp, but fewer people will notice because fewer people will buy it.

Class D amps typically use filters to remove high frequency switching noise. Pulse width modulation tracks the incoming signal and switches the output power supply accordingly. The circuit to do that filtering raises the output impedance. So that is why they removed the filtering. That means the high frequency noise is dealt with in a different way. But I don't design these stuff. It is all speculation based on what I have read and heard in the past. And I followed car audio amps in the past and slew rate mattered. What happened? My interpretation of it is 'how fast is the amp able to handle dynamics in audio.'

"2×80W peak output power (26V PVDD, RL = 4Ω, 10% THD+N level)"Yea, it''ll do 80w x2 into 4 ohms but that's at 10% THD! That's taken from the MA12070 web page. It just says "0.004% THD+N at high output levels" We have no idea where that's at, and you can guarantee that would be a 1khz only test, not 20hz to 20khz. So we are left with very vague power specs. This is why I'm always so skeptical about these little class D amps. Unless it's a Class D from NAD or something else reputable, it's hard to know what you're getting.

Right....let's put the AVR output in watts VS a Hi Fi Amps output in Watts to bed. They are not the same thing. If you have a 150 w/channel AV amp, with 7+1 channels, you have to understand how it is measured...because you CLEARLY do not have 1200w of output at your fingertips. They put ONE high load (normally 4 or 6ohm) speaker on ONE channel to do the measurement....this lets the amp purely drive that SINGLE speaker channel as hard as it can into 4ohm, in this case it uses 150w Now, IF you put an 8 ohm speaker there it would read at 100w(ish) So, they can now claim 150 watts per channel....and they are not (quite) lying So, what happens when you attach 8 speakers at 8 ohm to it? Approximately 20 watts per COMBINED channel is what happens.....it's a long way from 120w per channel isn't it? This differs from hi fi amps that measure with BOTH channels attached to more typical 8 ohm speakers....and it comes out at a less flattering, but also less bullshit, figure. And this, dear sir,, is why that little SMSL runs as loud as your AV amp. If you want to know what your AV amp produces, divide the figure by the amount of speakers, and then take off at least 30% if you are running 8ohm speakers

I have enjoyed my AD18 for about 2 years and I am very interested in the SA300. IN the end, it is the sound quality that matters. If smsl had to delete things to keep the price within a target range, so be it if the sound is better. I like smsl stuff, and so Im tolerant, and maybe biased. Every time I turn it on I'm impressed. Going through a lot of music. For a small to medium size room it's great . using s803 Jamo and Amazon cables Amazon prime music. Still experimenting with toe in, grills on or off. Vocals are good. Upper and lower great. Mid range average. Looking for better midrange speakers to compare one day. Really don't need a subwoofer. Use everything for casual listening. Thank you so much for the review. Coming back again. Thanks for responding

Nice production quality. The scripting was good but I think u should have a mix of scripted and unscripted videos. I think shirt scripted videos are good but not long ones. This was probably close to the max length that I would like scripted.

I actually just made bullet points. I don't like to read word for word. This is not really my style. Scripted takes way more time because it requires having more footage.

If you need that, it definitely is. There are optical to RCA converters for like $20, bit that's an added cost.

Hey everyone, just bought this amp with a pair of kali LP6 v2's and I'm having some issues setting it up. I have them hooked up with RCA cables with the rca power toggle on and I'm still getting no sound. I only can hear sound coming out of the speakers when the amp is turned off which ends up sounding very distorted and scratchy. I have it hooked up to my PC via USB. Does this sound like a bad amp?

Hi, I'm left with a pair of Bose jewel cube, going to purchase this Sa300 and a Edifier T5. I'm not an audiophile but do you think this setup works? Going to place them in a 50sq room, I know they look cool but do they sound cool? Thanks

@@joentell ya, the problem is that i don't have the bass module. Intend to purchase the Edifier t5 to replace that. Read quite a number of good review about the woofer but don't know if the SA 300, the Jewel cube and the T5 will work well together.. I'm not good at reading all their spec and number therefore need some advice.. thanks for replying!

@@edwin_cho I think the Bose are meant to be used with the bass module specifically. There are crossovers inside them to protect the cubes.

Yay!! I've been waiting for this comparison!! I always appreciate your perspective on these things. Do you know of any other desktop DAC/amps at around this price range that do have hi-pass crossover adjustment with a sub out? I would like to be able to filter out some low end in my bookshelves when I do eventually add a sub to the mix. It seems like a lot of these products leave out just one or two features that would make them perfect.

Now this is the kind of Class-D that we should see a lot more of. It'd work wonders for the sound in the previous active speakers you've reviewed. Such low noise and THD numbers put it right up there. 80W for this amp is plenty enough to power some good room-filling efficient speakers, too. As long as you're not driving planars it should be plenty loud enough for most people.
