Hello and welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
Lovey Warne was a prominent figure of smuggling lore in the New Forest in the South of England during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Lovey actively helped with the smuggling of contraband from the coast, inland to her home in Burley. Lovey also acted as a human beacon to warn others when the Revenue Men were in the area, by walking across a hill displaying the red lining of her coat. When other smugglers saw Lovey's bright red signal, they knew not to attempt to move any contraband until the coast was clear! After a very close shave with a Revenue Man in the town of Christchurch, Lovey vowed never to involve herself in smuggling again.
In this video, I am joined by Dave Ford and his dog Logan from the KZitem channel, 'Dave's Countryside Walks.' Dave invited me to join him and Logan so that he could show me the places where Lovey and her family lived and operated from. Dave and I literally walked in the footsteps of Lovey across the beautiful New Forest.
