This is my attempt at a tutorial explaining how to perform unintended exits in Super Mario World. Super Mario World is a notoriously glitchy game, allowing the player to go beyond what was intended by the game designers. Normally, there is a total of 96 exits in the game. Over the years, dedicated gamers discovered several unintended exits (see pastebin.com/w... for list).
Here I triggered a secret exit in the Funky level; the so-called SMW 100th exit. For this, I used unintendedly spawned Key and Keyhole in the level. Triggering a secret exit in levels having only a single normal exit usually activates the normal exit of the next level. Here, in the Funky level, this setup triggers the normal exit of the next ‘level’, which is the Special World Warp #2. First, we have to perform the Powerup Incrementation glitch to get Mario at Power Status 8 (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Power... for tutorial). At Power Status 8, go to Yoshi’s Island 2 to get the Key in the item box (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial). After, repeat Powerup Incrementation to go to Power Status 103. This Power Status allows Mario to spawn a Keyhole at the Goalpost if holding a Shell (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Goalp... for tutorial). So, to trigger Funky secret exit, first enter the level uncleared with Yoshi. Spawn the Key toward the end of the level and drop it near the Goalpost. Going back in the level, grab a Blue Shell and fly with Yoshi over the Goalpost. Place Yoshi with the Key in this mouth just behind the Goalpost. Grab the Blue Shell and jump into the Goalpost to land on Yoshi. The Shell will transform into a Keyhole. The Keyhole ‘falls’ on us, triggering the secret exit! The game asks us to save only after you move on the map. Here, even though we did not go back to Yoshi’s House through the Warp #2, the game is now in ‘autumn’ mode, as if we normally exited Funky level! Doing this, we will get an additional exit in the game file :). After, the normal exit of Funky is triggered using the Orb (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial on spawning the Orb in the item box).

My setup: I use an original Japanese Super Mario World cartridge played on a Super Retro Trio 3 Console (PAL version); I thus played in Real-Time Attack [RTA] without Saved States. Crappy video (and sound) captured using an ‘EasyCAP’ USB adapter (S-Video signal) and ‘Honestech VHS to DVD’ software. Video editing done using Shotcut free software.
