Like two perfectly groomed superheroes breaking up conspiracies to dominate the world, Steve and Caleb are back to take on another item of received wisdom in the firearm world: The notion that longer barrels are always more accurate. So, guys, are they? The answer starts with a provisional "Yes, sometimes." But there are plenty of very accurate guns with short barrels. That's because a barrel's accuracy depends on multiple factors. Extra barrel length CAN improve accuracy by giving you a longer sight radius if you're shooting with open sights. Some powerful magnum cartridges like .300 Win Mag require a longer barrel to ensure full combustion of the powder or to provide enough spin to properly stabilize the bullet. But with, say, .22 Long Rifle, any barrel beyond 12" really doesn't improve accuracy at all in terms of powder burn or bullet spin. And while it's important to fully burn ALL of the powder in the cartridge, extra-hot loads that generate more velocity are not automatically more accurate. Steve sums it up: there's no benefit to a longer barrel unless you have to burn more powder or spin the bullet faster. There's a sweet spot where barrel length, velocity, and accuracy intersect - and that's where you want to be. So the myth that a longer barrel is ALWAYS more accurate is... BUSTED.
